CPU: single, quad or dual quad?

I am currently using a pentium 4, 3.8 GHz cpu. This is a single processor. I see there are quad and dual quads. One has 4, the other 8 processors. I want better efx and less latency glitches, etc, etc. My needs are efx for live mixdown, soft synths, with latency and speed secondary. Will I see plenty of improvement going to the quad, or is the dual quad far better? I could use 64 bit, but that isn't a concern. My real concern: is dual quad overkill? Will a single quad be a major jump from the pentium 4? The other factor is the cpu of the dual quad is $150 per cpu (the Intel Xeon e5010 cpu). That is $300 that could be spent on a single cpu, say, the 7i. Which cpu set up is a better value? Will a single quad, or dual quad with 1.5GHz cpu's run faster than a pentium 4 with 3.8GHz? Will a single quad run efx software nearly as well as the dual quad?
thanks,

    What do you reckon?

    4 x 1.5 = 6
    8 x 1.5 = 12

    is 6 > 3.8 ?
    is 12 > 3.8 ?

I have a 2.2GHz single core box with 1.5 GB RAM and IDE hard drives and a 2.4 GHz Q6600 quad with 3GB RAM and SATA drives and the quad system is easily 5x-6x faster than the single core for multi-threaded apps when it should only be around 4x faster. SATA vs IDE and faster RAM/bus speeds will also make a big difference.

The more cores the better. I have a Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz that can be overclocked to 3.2Ghz with 4 Gigs of OCZ Ram. My system smokes. A good sound card makes or breaks a system also. Drivers play a big role in ASIO or WDM performance. dont overlook that aspect of it.

Do you have to use 64 bit software to get the most out of quads, or do they work great with 32 bit?
    thanks
