Jumping from AMD X2 4200 to Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

Hi all,

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new system (to be assembled by myself) and wondering what sort of performance boost I'm likely to see running S8 PE under Windows XP... I'm guessing my CPU consumption should drop by somewhere to 1/2 to 1/3 of what I currently have on the same project at the same settings... Does this seem vaguely accurate?

Thanks in advance....

Paul

will give you a general idea.. I run amd x2, but I'm holding out till the i7's get a fair bit cheaper.

    e8400 = 2145
    amd x2 4200 = 1030

so yep it might be half, but you'll notice the difference. It's various factors besides the cpu as well.

Thanks Fog, that's a very handy chart. Those i7's are amazing... I'm hoping to upgrade to a Q9650 or whatever by around Christmas. Fun fun fun!

well hopefully the price will drop on the chips by then.. there was a thing for the x2's if you were running xp, amd optimiser.. but I can't find a direct link to it.. dunno if it improved things much..

some software I run (reason is the main one) that I run should be outperforming my intel laptop, BUT it's not.. so thats part of the reason for the switch for me..

Got myself a cheap Q6600 - bit older, but *way* easier to OC, even up to 50% faster, while still staying within the heat/voltage specs.

Can't do that as easily with the newer ones, even - different multiplier.

Cost me less than the latest Core Duo elsewhere. Worth it?

    Yoo-hoo.

I'm very happy with my new Q9550 - picked it up relatively cheaply.....

    My PC flies now....

so now I 'need' a 64 bit OS and loads more RAM to really push the samplers to the limit...

    LOL

    where will it end?

Nah, I'm still on 32-bit, so it's not using all of my 4 gigs.

But sod that, 64-bit is for the next mobo upgrade with plenty more gigs- by that time either everything I use is 64 bit, or ditched. Still need my Rewire and all that.
