Using laptop keyboard and a "Keyboard"

HI - A friend of mine has an Apple and one day while on vacation I was messing around with making some basic composition "drafts" since Garage Band worked off of an on-screen keyboard function. Can this be enabled with other DAWs on a PC (laptop) ? Just wanted to know so sometime when on the road with my laptop I can gets some ideas recorded......at the moment I have no DAW installed on my PC (Dell)....

THanks

Does this cost money? I'm a bit confused.

    Hi Silvercn,

I think the link Beagle gives is for Mac computers and you say you have a Dell.

One that is for Windows PC's is the  MIDI-Ox MIDI-Yoke combination.

As a whole, it is a very powerful system, but within there is a virtual graphical keyboard that you click onto with the mouse. The good things, otherwise it's like an external keyboard, connections-wise.

    Also, it is totally free.

    no, it's not.

    http://www.bome.com/products/mousekeyboard/downloads

this is the free trial of Mouse/Keyboard.  requirements as listed on that page:
WINDOWS 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP (Vista and Windows 7 should work, too)

if he wants a mouse input that's fine, but he asked for a keyboard input.  bomes is the only one I'm aware of that has that.

I"m pretty sure repear let's you do this. http://www.reaper.fm/

You could install it on your laptop. Reaper is free.

Also Ableton, let's you do this easily too, like garageband.

Also, there is "e-keys". A very small USB keyboard, could fit in a bag/suitcase. There's probably other small midi keyboards. I think there is a "roll-up" one too.

Yeah, if I played keys, I would get something like this for traveling.

    Reaper is free.

really not trying to pick on you guitardog, but I completely disagree, this is an incorrect statement.

reaper is shareware.  it costs $50 for a non-commercial license and $250 for a commercial license (last time I checked, those numbers may have changed).  that means if you use reaper for your personal use and nothing else, you're supposed to register it for $50.
if you use it to distribute demos or songs on CD or other medium (including streaming/downloading on the internet) then you are supposed to register as a commercial use program.

it's true that it is not crippled in any way, therefore you can use it unlimited without registering at all.  but that does not mean that it's free.

Bomes Mouse is pretty handy for what you want to do, Charles.
Earlier versions needed a virtual MIDI connection to work with Sonar, but it looks like the new version has that built in.
Also the new one has wheels for pitch bend and modulation. I don't recall seeing that before.
You don't have velocity, of course, but it's great for getting an idea down when the moment strikes.
