Trying to import stereo WAV file as 2 mono tracks
Hi, I'm trying to do something that should be easy. I have a stereo WAV file, and I want to bring it in as 2 separate mono tracks. I use File..Import Audio, and I select "Import as mono tracks" in the dialog box, and it comes in as a single stereo track! I've repeated several times (hoping for different results -- does that mean I'm insane?). Given that that doesn't work, it seems that there ought to be a way to separate a stereo track into 2 mono tracks, but I haven't found a way. If you have any idea how to make this work (either the initial import, or the separation of a stereo track into 2 monos), please let me know. Thanks! Mike

Are you using the copy audio to project folder option as well? Just a guess but if you are making two mono tracks.... that don't yet exist... they have to go somewhere. Which is unlike importing a Stereo track as Stereo because the stereo file does exist and it's just a matter of where it is stored. Does that make sense? I'm just guessing... give it a try. best regards, mike

I tried both with and without the "Copy audio to project folder" check box, and neither works. I found a couple of other posts about this same problem, and one suggestion was to import the file (getting a stereo track), then export audio specifying "Split Mono", and then reimport the resulting 2 mono tracks. I just tried that, and it works, but what a pain in the butt! I think that "Import as mono tracks" is extremely in clear in terms of what it ought to mean. This is a bug in my opinion! Thanks for the suggestion Mike!

To import as two mono tracks uncheck the "copy audio to project folder" and check the "import as mono tracks" or import as stereo and bounce the track to "split mono" channel format.

I've never had a problem importing stereo wav files as separate mono files. If all else fails, import the stereo file and then (as suggested above) bounce to mono tracks.

Thanks everyone. I'll try again tonight and make sure that "Copy audio to project folder" is not checked. I believe I tried this, but it's worth another try. I'll post the results here, and if it doesn't work, I'll submit a bug report. I'm using Sonar Studio version 8 (I don't remember the "." level, but I've installed all the latest updates). Mike

I tried again, with both settings of "Copy audio to project folder", and it doesn't work. I will submit a bug report. Mike

Hey Mike, any news regarding this problem? I use Sonar 8 PE and 8.5 PE on Windows 7 64-bit and have the same problem. Importing stereo audio files with "Import as mono" checked will import one Mono file only, titled as "Filename, Left". But where's the right side? Lemon

I would think when you Import a stereo file to mono it would sum both sides to create a single mono track, not just one side of the stereo image. You would have to either split to 2 mono tracks before importing or import as stereo and then split to mono.

Hi! When you go to the import window and click "Help" you can read what the "import to mono" function is for. Unfortunatley I use the german version, so I can't post the exact message here, but I can tell you that this function is for importing stereo files and split them automatically into two mono channels. You are very right lemon. I tried it and it works here like advertised. Sorry for this misinformed speculation. I inserted 1 track at end of project and(did not select the folder option) selected the import as mono option and it imported to the selected track and created an additional track at the bottom of the project for the other track.

Lemon, No, I have no news. I never got it to work for me. For me, the import comes in as a stereo track (not as just the left channel as happens for you). I guess the best option is to import as a stereo track and then then bounce to mono tracks, as someone suggested above. Mike

Anyway, I've contacted Cakewalk 2 days ago, still waiting for an answer. I'll post it here then. Lemon

Lemon Hello, I have just been unsuccessfully trying to import an MP3 file into a separate "left" and "right" track, but it comes out as one stereo track. It looks like this thread died with no result from Cakewalk or someone posting an elegant solution? Please let me know, Thanks Marvin

Ya, your asking a question to a person who might now be on the x1 forum, Papa left the room 2 years ago for example. Interesting problem. What's not clear is did they want a separate mono left and right track, or a mono combo of the stereo file?

I did start a new thread a coiuple of days before this, and had got nowhere. It was a ghost thread. Still looking for an answer but Channel Tools served as a workaround
