I hear my mouse!!...Eeek!!

All of a sudden this morning I started getting an intermittent, faint yet noticeable buzz in my monitors. It would start up, buzz for minute or two then stop for a few minutes, then start again. Not good. I started checking things (i.e. to see if it was being recorded...it wasn't) and eliminating one at a time potential causes until...bingo... it's the walwart power supply for my Focusrite Saffire LE. I unplugged the wart and just let the SLE run on firewire buss power and that solved the buzz. My old MOTU Ultralite made noise if you didn't use the wart. Just the opposite for the LE, I guess. I suppose the wart is going bad, is intermittent buzz a sign of this?

But to the topic of this post: Now that the buzz is gone and everything is back to being "quiet as a mouse" (pun intended) I can, quite literally, hear my mouse scrolls in my monitors. It's like a faint squeaking sound when I scroll up or down. Very...er...mouselike. This is even if all the pots are completely down on the Saffire. Talk about a rat's nest....sheesh. Anybody else seen (I mean "heard") this??

Yes, it happened to me once. With a wireless mouse. Replaced it, problem gone. I'm guessing some kind of frequency interference.

Cheesy song? (Sorry couldn't help it)

Are you using a power conditioner?

No, I'm not using a power conditioner...guess I probably should. And this is a wired, optical mouse. Now the scroll squeaking is intermittent.

does it only do this when sonar is open?

could it be the graphic-card that is causing this noise?

Power conditioners do solve and help prevent many noise problems.
I would first Move the walwart to another outlet. Try moving the mouse to a different USB port.
Clean the Computer Case interior, including the power supply. Blow out and vacuum out dust from every nook and cranny. Don't forget the fans including the Video heatsync/fan

Reseat *ALL* of the cards in the system, CMOS and memory. Pull the cards, and reseat. With the CMOS simply make sure it is seated properly.

Whether or not this fixes the problem, a power conditioner is really a must have item.
It could be a video card issue. Don't know at this point however.

Did you happen to have recently moved something in the studio?
Is something sitting close to the computer monitor?

After favoring wireless mice for many years, I have given up them altogether. The extra cable clutter of a wired mouse is a small price for reliability. And they're cheaper to replace when you wear out the clicker (which I do regularly).

One mouse had particularly nasty issues with jerky response or even locking up. And it always seemed to happen at the worst possible time: when I was on the phone with a customer. Well, it wasn't my imagination, it was caused by interference from my cordless phone!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I almost commented on the wireless mouse, but in post #4, he said it was corded.

I had a bad case of this...you can check out some discussion here:

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1698762&mpage=1&key=

The upshot of it all was, I think...that my monitors were too close to my monitor. The closer my monitors (speakers) are to my monitor (screen), the louder the squeaking and interference caused by moving a page up or down. It can be reproduced with the arrow keys on the keyboard (typing keyboard) so it's not a just a mouse scroll wheel thing...it's the movement of graphics on the monitor (screen)

montezuma, I have this problem on an HP stock computer I do not use for audio except playback. I read your other thread. The monitor speakers are right next to the monitor screen. I'll try adding some space. Thanks!

No, it's an LCD, but a very early one. Maybe six years old now.

Well, I started getting noise (similar to my MOTU Ultralite when not using the power supply) with the Saffire so I relocated the wall wart and plugged it back in. So far, no new buzz and no more "mouse squeaking" when scrolling. I'll keep ya posted. There's just too many dang thangs ta go wrong with them there computers and such.

If the wall-wart is switcher-based instead of the old-style linear regulator type radiation from that could be a problem. And the radiation could be both conducted through the power lines as well as radiated from the unit itself through the air.

I had this problem on one my me earlier desktop computer... every mouse movement gave me a very low but audible squeek/buzz sound... I isolated the grounds on all my equipment (computer, power amp etc).. and the noise went away... Craig
