Argh. What chord is this? F-A-B-C# w/ F bass

Jazz in the key of D.
The phrase is
Em7, (???), D6

where (???) = F-A-B-C# with F bass

In that context, what would you call it?

    Otherwise known as the F-major-demolished?

What's confusing me is how can you have augmented 5th & flatted 5th at the same time (in terms of nomenclature)??

Db7+5/F (the 7 is the minor 3rd tone of the Db chord). Very nice chord!!!
It can also be called an Fsus4+5 chord but you don't see it named that way very often.
It really depends on which key the song is being played in 'cause it can have several names.

    Cool!! Thanks guys.
C#7+5/F (or Db7+5/F) (or fish minor) sounds a lot better than what I was calling it!

I think this is my new fave chord of all time. You can follow it with just about any chord in the book. Muahaha can anyone say Key Change City

It might also be considered an F11(+5) (It would help if you also had an Eb and some sort of G) It may even be called a B9(-5)/F, but really the name or the root would more properly be determined by it's function ... where it is in the phrase, and what the other changes are.

Here's a nifty illustration. It's the 2nd chord from the end, on 'heavenly'.

Hello Mr. Duck. Bayoubill here. Em to ? to D6 is a 2 5 1 progression. That's ii7 V7 I. Any notes added can be thought of as color tones .You're in the key of D. So, spell the V7 as A- C#-E#-B = A9+5/F. With F in the bass it still functions as a V7chord but is thought of as a diminished chord. Any of the 4 notes can be the root name. A dim,C# dim etc.
Hope this helps. If you want a better explanation(longer but easier to understand) let me know.

Hey Mr. Bill! I like your answer. All answers are correct, but in the context of the Em-???-D6 progression, I think yours makes a lot of sense. In fact the entire progression is this (yeah I should've mentioned this up front, sorry guys! )...

    D6 . . . G6 . A7 .
    D6 . . . G6 . A7 .
    D6 . . . Em7 . (???) .
    D6
    . . . . . . .

(ignore the Silent Night example I posted earlier, that's a different song altogether)

So anyway, you sniffed it; it's basically a ii7-V7-I, and the mystery chord, with added color, is A9+5/F. All answers are correct but I think I'll use Bills in my notation.

Thanks to everyone who played. We have some lovely prizes and Turtle Wax for you backstage

Can you spell out the tab for this chord - I have tried it but had to use one of the wife's fingers for the F bass.

    Must be doing something wrong.

    the lazy man's capo

Yikes I wouldn't know where to begin on guitar. I've been playing it on piano where 2 hands, 10 toes & a nose are fair game. But actually the F bass is not that important. Try a plain A chord with the E raised to F and throw in a B. That gets the job done.

Wish I knew more theory so I could name it. It's similar to a "Spanish" F chord: F in the bass, and an E major shape with the remaining fingers on the 2nd and 3rd frets. The other things I tried was F in the bass, then 4th str 3rd fret, 3rd str 2nd fret, 2nd str open, adding 2nd fret (like an arpeggio).
