M-16DX or FA-101?
Please help me on deciding which to get. I put great importance on the preamp quality. The price difference is not much. I don't get why the m-16DX isn't far more expensive than the FA-101 even if the M-16DX is a Mixer w/ Audio Interface in one package. So its like if your paying $600 for the FA-101 but pay $700 for the M-16DX, its like maybe its audio interface isn't well made or the quality was thrown all out in the mixer and the audio interface is just an add-on. Its just strange. Or maybe Edirol is just feeling generous. Please give some opinions. Thanks .

The FA-101 is a firewire device and the M-16DX is a USB device - that's one big difference. my guess would be that the preamps and the A/D and D/A converters on the FA-101 are probably a little higher quality than the ones on the 16DX, too. probably not by a LOT, but enough to make the price difference relevant.

Regardless of what socket is available to me, which has a higher data transfer rate or whatever benefits? Firewire or USB?

I saw a review on FA-101 and FA-66 that said that their only applicable to Mac OSX and Windows XP? Is this true? I use Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit).

It's more likely that the Firewire socket is not going to be available to you, but in any case I don't think you'll notice any significant performance difference between Firewire and USB. If you need the four mike inputs of the m16 then that may force the issue. Otherwise consider the UA-101 with a small mixer if you want to be certain of avoiding any Firewire demons. Phil

They both have vista 32 and 64bit drivers. They where one of the first to have them, so where ever you read that, i would never read anything form it again, because they dont know jack form @#$%Y^& Cj

Phil I wouldn't be forced to choose USB or firewire anyway because i don't have them both (My USB socket is the regular USB socket and i only have a single 1394a socket, so i'd still be forced to buy a PCI card for either.) Speaking of the Firewire socket, the FA-101 uses both the two 1394s? Or is the other socket just an extra socket?

Ive used an edirol fa66 in vista. all you need to do to see its not ttru is go to the Fa66 web site, edirol or roland.com and look at its driver listings or requirements. Its easy cheesy to see that article is not tru Cj

And is it really need that the firewire socket is by TI. I have one socket here but its VIA.

You only need one cable going into the FA-66. If it is the 6-pin, that's enough and will power it. If its the 4-pin, you will also need to attach the supplied power supply.

I just got M-16DX yesterday... Based on my first impressions, this digital mixer is primarily designed for live use. I'm still trying to figure out how to do direct monitoring while overdubbing tracks in DAW. Apparently, only Channels 1-12 can be routed to headphones without going to thru the main mix. The catch is that the computer signal is routed via USB on Channels 13-14 and can't be rerouted... I must be missing something... If there is anyone using M-16DX for studio recording, I would love to hear from you. . George Solo http://musicline.ca/ http://georgesolo.com/

Also chiming in from MusicLine's other thread... ;-) As mentioned by others before, we would need more background on the purpose of use, as the M-16 and The FA are pretty different in features. If you primarily need a Mixer with the added benefit of a USB2 audio interface, the M16 is the choice. But it's limited in it's routing capabilities. If you primarily need an audio interface for mixing in the DAW, the FA / UA series may be more for you. You should also base it on your requirements regarding inputs needed...# of preamps, ph powered, Hi-z ins, line ins, etc. I have no personal experience with the FA/UA series, but in that price range I would also have a look at the Focusrite offerings... Cheers

If you primarily need a Mixer with the added benefit of a USB2 audio interface, the M16 is the choice. But it's limited in it's routing capabilities. After intensive use of M-16DX over the weekend, I would fully agree with doctorweir's observation. The sound quality is excellent, AD/DA converters are, to my ears, a significant step up from EDIROL UA-4FX and M-Audio Audiophile 2496, the cards I also use. Automatic room acoustic compensation feature works great and is very easy to use - it's probably worth the price of the whole mixer. However, the lack of MIDI in/out and the fact that Headphone volume control is POST Main Mix volume (in other words, you can not have just sound from computer in your headphones without having Main Mix to speakers turned up) indicates that this device was primarily developed for live mixing ( and would do a great job for that, I'm sure)

Epic necromancery dudes! Anyway, thanks for sharing some help. Although, i ended up buying neither of them. I bought an UltraLite-mk3 instead, and i'm sure happy with it.
