My music only?

How do you know when you are listening to your own material too much? Sometimes I feel like I get used to thing I would have changed before I got too biased.

Great philosophical question. I don't know that I have a complete answer. I do know that I like to involve others in the writing, playing, and production of my tunes. And, I listen to alot of different kinds of music -- not just what I play.

As an analogy, unless you have really great "genes", you're more likely to have music with "birth defects" if you limit your listening to one style and try to do everything yourself. Some people can be successful that way, but they seem to be exceptional. I think that the more you expose yourself to others, the better.

    Great question.

For me I hit ear fatigue long before I'm "tired" of listening to my music.

Funny thing though, while in the car some songs (of mine) I can listen to over and over and others once is enough. Just like commercial music it seems.

I agree competely that it's better to have others involved throughout. Unfortunately I'm alone by default, as a husband, father and working long hours.
I've thought about online colaberations, but don't know yet how all that works, or how to NOT get 'bitten' in some way.

I have asked some others to give detailed feedback, but none are musicians. While helpful- it's not the same.

AND, I too can listen to some of my music repeatedly, as well as grow bored with others. I do love to listen to my favorite band CDs, while hoping I'm not too influenced to be uniquely creative. I would HATE to hear someone say "Hey, that sounds just like...".

As this has seemed to be a recurring situation with me, I believe I should 1, seek professional help (musical advice from real musicians), and 2, Strictly limit my own exposure.

I don't know if it's ear fatigue for me, but just the tendency to get used to most anyting with enough exposure. I've said it before, "you only get one chance to hear a song for the first time". The problem I have when I'm mixing, editing, recording, etc is that no matter how screwed up something is, if I listen enough times anything will start to sound normal (or worse yet, sound good). I have to be away from a project at least 24 hours to view it objectively again. I usually sit down far away from the studio and have a notepad (or a blackberry) at hand. I listen with my finger on the pause button and stop and take notes whenever I notice something. I use the notes next time I mix, and repeat the process as often as needed.

That sounds like really good feedback (Sorry, had to). But really. Often when listening I make those observations mentally but have yet to take the systematic approach so that I actually remember.

    I'll try that soon.
