Using VST synths in live situations

Is it possible (I'm sure it is) to use VST soft synths in a live situation? I use Sonar PE @ home, what would I use as the host program if I were to want to use a couple soft-synths live? Never even considered this application before now.

    not sure how it works in sonar, though im sure its the same, but i use ableton live with a backing track a keyboardist playing a soft synth at the same time witn a bass and guitar running through a small mixer

    Sonar 8 Studio, Ableton Live 8, XP Media SP2, Intel Dual Core 2.80Ghz, 4GB RAM, 500 & 250Gb SATA
