Need help with mixing a low pronounced bass into a mix

Hi, I'm trying to get a low and pronounced bass sound in a mix like "White Flag" by Dido or the chorus in "Killing Me Softly" by the Fugees.  The problem I have is that the bass kind of blends into the singers' vocals ( kind of low and deep vocals ) so it sounds horrible, it's like some of the notes of the bass change to a sludgey sound...  When the vocals are muted the bass sounds perfect...  so how would you separate the two so that both are pronounced without cutting the lows of the voice since that is their style?  Would panning the bass ( Like have the guitar to the left, base to the right, vocals and drums in midle...) fix this or would it just not fit right?     Thnx!

Anyone else have this problem?

You will have to use EQ to solve your problem. Any time you have too much going on in the bass range it turns to mud.

Whatever you do don't pan the bass! If you pan the bass the tune will be very hard to listen to on anything but mono speakers (when the panning won't matter) or very small portable speakers. Try listening to On the Beach by The Paragons on headphones... (Beautiful song but panning is craaaaazy!)

As Byron said you probably have to use EQ. Maybe you could duck the bass during vox but that probably gonna make the tune very pumping and also you wont have bass in the verses

I think the best thing you can do is to post it in the Songs forum with an explanation and then we can hear it as well, might bring up some ideas.

    All the best

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.
