How can I create different mixes ?
I would like to create different earphones mixes. I mangaged to du that by using pre fader sends to a different bus but is there other ways mof doing this ? Would have been nice to be able to use the faders instead but I guess this is difficult. I'm using Presonus Firepod (FP10). I think other interfaces like MOTU can set up several mixes in the hardware/DSP not using computer CPU to create the mixes. I have just seen a used MOTU 896HD FireWire Audiointerface for sale. It would be nice to use the audio interface as a digital mixer when not used in a DAW. Does anyone know if the MOTU CueMix software also is based on sends to make different mixes or if the faders can be set up differently for each output/buss ? Unfortunatly is seems like the 896HD do not provide onboard effects etc. like a lof of the new MOTU interfaces do.

The concept of different headphone cue mixes is predicated on using sends. By setting up different sends and headphone buses you can easily adjust volume levels to different performers. If you use the track faders, there is no way to vary the level to individuals. Any changes made to faders would be universal which defeats the purpose of multiple cue mixes. You could, theoretically, do this but the only benefit would be if, for example, the keyboard player doesn't want to hear the guitars at all, etc.,...

I've been considering getting a multi-channel-(8) headphone mixer. One with 8 ins and 8 outs and running the 8 outputs on the V 700 R to it. They're not cheap. But that would be true channel seperation for each player in real time operation.

Slightly off topic but related, I would like to see a feature that allows me to create a main mix and save this as a "preset 1" or whatever you want to call it, change the mix again into something else and save that as a new "preset 2", change the mix again, save to new "preset 3", you get the picture. Then I can quickly recall the different presets and compare between them, to decide which mix I like the best and go with that for minal mix, or actually export a number of different mixes, one "album", one "radio", etc. I guess the workaround is to save it as a new project and ceate a new mix, which works OK. But sometimes you just want to do some slight alterations to the mix and discuss/play it for someone else before you set on the final mix and a "preset"-feature for mixes would be a nice to have. Please correct me if I've missed that Sonar 8 Producer already have this kind of feature, or if you have some better workaround. /Donald

Just name them differently. Why you want to use the term preset, I don't know. Try saving as version 1, version 2, etc. But you still have to remember which version you want where.

Craig - I do exactly that. ADAT out of my RME into an 8ch D/A and then into a Rane headphone amp for 4 stereo foldback mixes. The musicians love it. -Dan

Hmm... Perhaps I don't understand what you mean Crg. Are you proposing doing a mix and then saving the project as "mix 1", do another mix and then save as... "mix 2" and so on? Or where do you save your "version 1", "version 2", etc. If I have understood you correctly, I do that. However, with large projects it can take some time to load the new one, each time I want to compare the different mixes. Of course I can have several projects open at the same time, but that can quickly put the CPU under a lot of preassure. Saving as a new project is, as I said in my previous post, a workaround, but it's not ideal. If I totally missed the point, please explain further. wintaper, a headphone mix is different in my mind. I usually do those with sends from each bus I want to include, and direct the send to a separate Out on my MOTU 828 Mk3 (or Phones). Obviously I can create as many headphone mixes as I like that way. The problem here is that adding new or different effects or processors becomes a bit cumbersum. I guess I can just send the signal to a new bus and add the new effect/processor there. However, I can imagine that I pretty soon end up with 84 buses and counting and it all becomes very complicated. Perhaps I missed your point completely as well? What I was looking for was a simple way to take a snap-shot of a mix, continue changing the mix, take a new snap-shot, and so on. Later on I should be able to switch between snapshots instantly to listen to the different mixes. Photoshop Lightroom has a similar feature, when you're working on a picture. You develop it, crop, retouch and do whatever you want, then take a snap shot of that version of the picture, change it into a black and white picture and take another snap shot, go back to the first snap shot and cross process it, take another snap shot, and so on. I know have 3 snap shots of the same picture with different development, crop, etc. and can instantly switch between them to decide which I like better, or just export/print all 3. I can also create a virtual copy of each snap shot and compare them all side by side. Perhaps I'm just a bit slow and don't understand how to do this easily in Sonar 8P. If so, please let me kow.
