first song with the emu - On The Balcony :)

check it out.

First song I've written for a long time.

This was put together quite quickly over about 4-5 hours.

Kind regards

Dave Rich.

I like it. Great tune. Really nice drum sound on there. Are those acoustic? I felt the bass guitar was just a bit tubby, but overall I found the mix to be pretty close to where it needs to be.

    Good job.

the drums are sonic implants sf2 - bluejay ambient collection.

Eq'd and pushed through rubytube and a little verb to liven them up a bit.

Sad thing is my emu has just DIED - otherwise I'd reply in more detail.

    Dave,

I wish I could do something like this in 4 - 5 hours. Great vocals. Great acoustic guitar sound. I like it.

I like the withholding of most of harmonyvocals until about 0:58. It really sets your chorus off in a song which, at least now, has limited instruments.

Thanks for all the comments folks.

My emu has been sent back - for all those following my soundcard saga - it appears there was a fault with it all along to do with phantom power,- and eventually the whole thing died - but there you go.

Waiting for my replacement but in the meantime I'm running the cport to hold fort.

    Aaanyway -

    The song.

Yeah the arrangement is very simple - I kinda like it that way. I was basically testing the pre-amps/converters of the Emu - Everything you hear apart from drum/bass was recorded with it.

2 guitar parts - the electric - and 1 lead vocal - 2 backing vocal tracks.

All pushed through Voxengo elephant of course ;)

The vocal mic was a studio projects b3. - and the guitar was recorded with the b3 and the b1 as an ambient mic.

Drums were played realtime on the keyboard using Sonic Implants Blue Jay ambient kit (in fact a scaled down version of this kit is on the sonar3pro sample content cd) which was eq'd with sonitus - pushed through rubytube - and lexicon ambient reverb.

The bass was also Sonic Implants - their rickenbacker soundfont - eq'd some of the pick noise out and boosted the bottom end. Also pushed through the sonitus modulator on it's default setting (I love what this does to bass) A little rubytube finished it off.

I don't think I'll be adding to the arrangement - I like it as it is - a nice simple pop song :)

    Kind regards

Am I still trippin from last night or does it sound like the bass has a slight panning effect? :-)

This is a pleasant song, nice mix, although I think the vocals could have stood out in the mix a bit more, perhaps a frequency boost. Everything is very well done, good job!

yeah toy,- that's the modulator doing it's thing.

I just love it - sometimes it's not appropriate, but for this song I think it fits - almost makes it sound fretless-y

And the vocals - yeah I wanted them to sit back - the main reason being the groove is great, I didn't want the sometimes dodgy lyrics to get it the way ;o)

    Kind regards

    Hey Jerry, fine fine..

I changed my name because Dj Hysteria wasn't representative of the music I have done nor what I will want to create.. I had always used that name for multiplayer gaming or something, but it doesnt work for me, it's misleading, and I suspect some people don't review my music in some cases b/c of a name that might resemble I'm doing "beats, loops, hip hop, etc etc"..

    I like Semi-Perfect better anyhow..

I also wanted to ask what effect you used on "Driving Me Away" to get your wah wah sound and instrument.. and did you use panning envelopes to get the L/R feel throughout the song?

sheesh -- bad enough you bump your own songs!

No Sir, you are mistaken. I don't 'bump' my songs. I only reply to comments that people make about them. Additionally, I think it would be rude not to reply to someone who has taken the time and cares enough to make a comment about one of my songs...That's just the way I operate.

I gave Dave's song a bump because it's a really good one and deserves a few more listens, IMO.

    hi dave,
nice tune .. sorry about your emu ;-(

    few comments:
Lyric doesn't start on time to me ... "Don't know" (;14) .. tad late.
I'd like the vox a little louder ...
wish the backing harmonies were spread out a little further.
the harmony on the word "for" in the chorus is odd ... i'd go up higher....
i like the bend back to verse .. that's cool
i'd mess a little more with the chord voicings .. play some
games with inversions and playing with a suspension / 7th, etc.
one time and without .. would add some interest to
the song .. maybe drop the bass deep a couple
    of times.

other than that . not bad for a half day!!

hope your card gets better ;-(

    hi dave

although i found the composition to be pretty cool with an almost billy brag feel to it.

the first thing that popped into my head when i listen was "squashed". I,m not sure i mean by compression either but just something didn't seem to be quiet right maybe in the mids but i don,t have the expertise to say where really its just a perception

    cheers

    Hey Dave,

I'm in the vocals forward camp. Your voice has a nice semi-van morrison timbre and should be heard. Fix the lyrics if you feel the need but get the vocal out there. I read all the raves about the drums. Sorry, I must advise to get the drummer(sic) out of the bathroom. The snare sticks out like a sore, well, snare. I find that especially in simple compositions one reverb setting is best with different amounts of send of each channel or buss. That keeps the band in the same space but in different parts of it.

Excellent 5 hour effort. Can't wait to hear remixes.

    Cheers,

    DD
