How to Midi-Control Sonitus EQ?
Hi Folks, i´d like to create a Template for my Novation Zero SL MK2 to control the Sonitus EQ since Automap doesn´t seem to work in that case (with DXi-Plugins). Can i do that without need to use ACT for that? And if so, how do i know or assign which CC will work which Parameter on the Sonitus EQ? I studied some Threads here in this nice Forum and few People stated like "it´s easy to just create a Template for controlling the EQ" but sorry i don´t really check how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Dax, I had the same problem, solved it then realised that it was pointless with EQ. Why I hear you say...even though its great to have real knobs/sliders controlling parameters? Because...Midi has increments from 1 to 127, so every time I move a slider the smallest amount it will move + or -1 up to 127 times. This means that if I want to change the frequency of a filter on an EQ I have 127 possible settings. But this is accurate I hear you say....! Dividing your frequency response which will be 20Hz to 20KHz has at least 20 thousand different possibilites. Divide this by 127 and you see that the smallest increments on your controller equals 174Hz which isn't accurate at all. If anyone has found a way to get around this then I'd love to hear from them. There is a solution, but probably requiring you to purchase some hardware.... I hit this problem when designing the BCR2000 control surface plugin. Consequently, the plugin supports 'fine control' mode where you can press the SHIFT key on the control surface and then turn any knob. This takes the MIDI CC coming in from the rotary control - which as you quite rightly state, has only 127 values - and increments/decrements the current value that the EQ wants to see by a much smaller amount, giving you fine control of EQ - certainly you can move around with 1Hz precision or so in fine control mode. (because internally Sonar controls all parameter values as floating point numbers from 0 to 1) So - if you want to spring for a BCR2000, not terribly expensive - you can have all the fine-grained knobular control of EQ you like. The surface plugin is, of course, free to download, see other posts elsewhere in the forum. In theory, the plugin would accept MIDI CCs from any source - it does not know or care what MIDI device is actually connected - and with an appropriately configured Novation it probably would allow you fine EQ control, thinking about it. You just have to send the CCs it's expecting, which are documented in the software release notes.

@Rodar: Thank you for your answer. I get your point, right 174 Hz-Steps isn´t much accurate But would you anyways be so kind and let me know how you solved it? Even controlling the abrasive steps with knobs would be much more "fun" for me and i can still make fine adjustments with the mouse then. @aj: Funny, i already thought about getting a BCR before i got the Novation since i already have two BCF2000 - but in white (which looks much nicer then the black/blue ones). And then i found a black BCR doen´t fit so good and i anyway liked the Novation much more because of the comfortable Routing, Display etc. You said the CCs are documentet in the software release notes? I can´t find it neither in the Sonar-Documentation nor in the detailed Online-Help for the EQ

If you use a Mackie Control you have much finer control over these things. The MC use a 14 bit MIDI event to do this. This works out to be somewhere in the 1000 step range.

Hey Dax, I set up my midi controller with Sonar's ACT. Maybe I was a bit too hastie when replying as I'm using an Axiom pro 25 and not a Novation. Its is actually quite simple to do using ACT (once you've got the hang of it) and you can save all of your preferences in under your own file name. You don't have to set the controls for every plugin that you have at the moment. Just do it when you need them. I started off by setting the reverb, compression etc then EQ. If you need a hand setting up the ACT, just ask Rod

If you want to automate parameters without ACT: - open an automation lane,
- set the EQ parameter to automate,
- right-click in the automation fader,
- select remote control,
- setup the controller as desired in the remote control dialog.
