Microphone Isolator... DIY?

I have a not so perfect space where I record... It's a corner of my family room.  Floor plan of the house is open, with a Living Room/Dining combo, kitchen and large Family Room, all open to each other with a stairway in the center of it all.  Yeah.  Horrible environment for recording.  I try and set up in the corner, so that vox reflects off the wall and back to the mic, but It's not so good that way.

So I've seen microphone isolators for sale on line and at GC, but wonder if anyone has ever tried to make one?  I'm just that kind of girl...

Thanks!

Go the DIY route, absolutely. It's easy. Even if you lack woodworking tools (or skills) you can have them cut frames pieces to length at the lumberyard/hardware store/home improvement megastore. Lots of detailed instructions and pictures can be found online. Google "DIY Acoustics".

What kind of mic are you using and is you facing the corner or is your back to it?

If you mean something like these there's no lumber involved.

Try some heavy guage metal screen that can bent into a curve and hold it's shape.  Attach some accoustic foam or any foam to that and attach a bracket that can mount to a mic stand.  Just check out the images and try to reverse engineer it.

Long before this product came out, when I had a room that sucked, I used a t-shirt hanging over a pop filter to surround the mic.

    That....was free.

If you can somehow position the mic and yourself between 2 thick comforters, it may work.

I made one once. They do work more than you would expect, but I found making an iso booth gave me much better results. The iso booth is made from six 4'x2' acoustic panels. Just a frame with 1" of fibreglass inside. I just place them into a booth shape when recording. Very movable and versatile and much better results - but more work to build it.

awesome.  Thanks all.  I'm pretty handy with creating things, and I think I'll give the wire screening/acoustic foam route a try... and move on to the wood and draperies/rugs if that doesn't do it for me!

I had 2 of THESE just sitting in the attic. So I brought them down to my little studio and got 2 heavy comforters and hung them using THESE. Made myself a nice free little vocal type booth.

Oooh!  Hey Mike, that's a GREAT idea!  May give that a shot...

I've actually made a dividing screen for my potters wheel (because I have it and use it in the garage, where the lawnmower MOCKS ME)... out of pvc pipe, a couple of o-rings to attach the panels together, and some fabric.

    Told you I was crafty.

My lawnmower used to mock me. It once got so contrary it put me in the hospital. Well, no longer. I parked a shiny red riding lawnmower next to it, and it got the message. Big Red doesn't get too smug, though, since its now-cowed predecessor is always there waiting to resume its duties should the new guy ever fail me.

I actually had a similar question but it would mainly be for recording vocals. My aunt bought a portable walkin closet made of fabric or polyester or something that has a see through plastic opening from walmart.. very portable and easy to move, I was curious if using one of these closets would work well as a vocal isolation room. Its probably 5 feet wide 3 feet depth and 5 feet tall. Just estimations. It sounds like there is no reflection of sound when you stick your head in there and talk. Let we know what you guys/gals think.

You can try it and see if you like it, but I'm skeptical.  I tried recording in a closet at home filled with hanging clothes, etc and it sounded TOO dead (believe it or not).  I think you need a little space and ambience for the the best results.

I've done the "my corner of the living room" thing too. You have to get pretty creative with acoustical treatments and gear exposure and whatnot (especially if you're married with kids). What looks cool to you doesn't always look cool to the wife or significant other. I would explore the simplest of solutions first such as hanging blankets or comforters in temporary ways. The expensive commercial solutions are great if you can afford that but the end results are not going to justify the extra expense (as far as I'm concerned). Who care what it looks like as long as it works right? Markertek sells these blankets that have hooks already built-in for TV/studio work. Have fun experimenting!

BTW, I've heard that moving blankets which you can get from U-Haul fairly cheaply can work well.
