48/24bit or 96/24 converted to mp3

IMPORTANT: This must be a 44.1kHz MP3 file, or it will play at wrong speed!

this is what it says in the song upload section of garageband.com.  is this true?

i convert 96 or 48's over to mp3 all the time, and have successfully got them past garageband. with no ill result. i play them in the car, no problem...

The sample rate of the wav file is not what determines the sample rate of the MP3 file. All MP3 encoders I've used always create 44.1khz files.

What converter are you using? The one built into GB? It is likely first re-sampling to 44 then converting to mp3 (which is by definition 44.1khz). A stand alone mp3 converter like LAME will refuse to convert 48khz.
