Spoken word recording...

I have been using an older version of Guitar Tracks Pro to record single vocal tracks for my voiceover business.  My question is, would it be better to purchase the latest version of Music Creator, or Guitar Tracks?  Or should I use something else?  I am only interested in the best tool to record a single vocal track; no instruments or other multi-track components.

Thanks!

You'll do fine with the older version. Make sure your record levels are set right then export

    I agree with Bill.

If you only need to record a single voice, then most of the tools that come with modern programs wouldn't be of interest to you (midi - loops - effects chains - etc).

IMHO your money is best spent  making sure you have excellent :
    1. Microphone
    2. Computer Interface
    3. Pre-Amp
    4. Quality Compression (possibly - depending on your set-up, voice, etc.)

    Thanks,

Hi there Michael, welcome to the forum.

The only concerns I have, quality wise, if you're using an older version of Guitar Tracks is what maximum bitrates and bit depths are available to you.

Guitar Tracks Pro2 and Guitar Tracks Pro3 both support 24 bit recording at up 96,000Hz - 24 bit/48,000Hz is the standard quality of DVD audio so if you have GTP2 or GTP3 you have the options for creating audio in excess of these specs, providing your soundcard allows this.

If you have Guitar Tracks 2, you're limited to 16 bit/44,100Hz recording - this is 'red book' CD standard audio so if that's the quality you need you'll still be fine.

    Hello Michael,

I think to properly answer your questions there are some questions to ask first:

    1. Do you intend to move to Windows Vista or Windows 7? If yes then a move to another DAW would be recommended. If not then your current platform may continue to work for you.
    2. Are you doing radio quality voice over? If yes then your current set up will do just fine. If you are however as Strummy pointed out doing voice over for video or broadcast video you will want to consider a move to a different DAW for the improved sample rates and dithering. But this may also entail a move to a new computing platform (Vista or Windows 7).
Curious about your recording setup though. What is your current signal chain for recording voice over?
