upgrade P5 -> Sonar 8.5

I bought P5 one year ago.
Am I entitled to get Sonar 8.5 discounted?

I'm pretty sure you get a 'for cakewalk customers' discount at the very least. Go to the store and go to the sonar page and there should be a box where you check which version you want... that should show you if there's a break for you.

I looked in the Sonar store! Following options:

. SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade from SONAR 7 Producer $179.00

. SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade from SONAR 8 Studio or 8.5 Studio $199.00

    . SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade from SONAR 7 Studio, SONAR 6 (Studio/Producer/Power Studio) $229.00

    . SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade from SONAR 1-5 (Studio/Producer) $249.00

. SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade from G Tracks Pro, Home Studio, Kinetic, Pro Audio, Project5, VS $349.00

. SONAR 8.5 Producer Upgrade for Any Registered Cakewalk Customer $449.00

    Sonar Studio, Project.5, HomeStudio - - Note:
You cannot opt for the download when upgrading because only the 'boxed' version has all the additional content (multiple DVD Discs) which is way too larger file to download. Therefor you must get the full BOXED version containing multiple DVD's

     where's the love?

they kill the product, cannibalize the features and don't provide a crossgrade discount.

I can see the point for those jumping onto P5 with the $99 download price, but for those of us who bought v1.0 at ??? --

     what that can't be ?
I paid how much for this?

      I feel the fool.

tbh I own Sonar (3 and) 5, but I'm probably more likely to upgrade from Live Lite 4 that came free with Trigger Finger to Live 8 than I would be to upgrade to Sonar 8/8.5 and then I may likely spend another bundle for Max for Live
because I believe I'd have a lot more fun per dollar invested with that setup.
And that fun per dollar invested ratio was the original impetus for the P5 purchase and

$179 for P5 users would be nice.

    I wouldnt mind $99...

but yeah, $449.00 is a little steep, especially since alot of our features where upgraded into the new sonar.

     I think P5 v1.0 was originally $429.
     Does anyone remember?

I think I paid around $399 at the 1st Cakewalk dog and pony P5 tour at Guitar Center, Southdale.

I think my receipt is in the original biodegradeable translucent plastic packaging (award winning no less).

They did offer $249 for an upgrade to S8 back when they announced P5 would be discontinued, the also stated that there were going to be things of interest in Sonar.

Hopefully for others they might roll out that offer again.

I do.  But I remember the 'street' price as being $299.99.  Twenty dollars off that if you showed up the dog 'n' pony show I attended (in Kendall, FL - April '03).  Having S7 Producer, I guess that it would end up as a Buy One, Get One Half Free!!! offer.

Given the track record, and a sizeable downloadable package, I'd have thought that someone would've snaked the pipes beforehand.

you are correct sir, my receipt date 07-01-03, indicates $269.99

and includes the Cakewalk Project 5 Seminar Discount -- One Day Only

and it was Roseville, not Southdale GC
what can I say they all look the same once you're inside

I still think P5 + Sonar 8 owners should get a better price at around $49 dollars to make up for the two last updates we never got.

    But whatever...

It's very, very disappointing Cakewalk didn't include the Matrix in Sonar 8.5.1 'Studio Edition'. This would have been a more 'budget friendly' alternative for customers wanting to upgrade from Project.5.

It seems fate has played it's hand in my decision.... apparently I'm not upgrading at all, can't login to my eStore account, sent two Emails to CW support, posted repeatedly on the forums in the same thread and still no reply.

AND!! I had also posted an important pre-sale question relating to 8.5.1.  Again, no reply from Cakewalk, just went straight past my post and ignored it.

Don't be cheap. Producer Edition is such a good value there's no reason not to get it. I have no problem with the premium features being reserved for the premium version. As a Sonar 7 PE owner (skipped v8) I will still be able to get 8.5 producer for less than the cost of many single plug in synths or effects! It's just too much of a bargain not to go for it.

Okay, so I just checked. $350 for P5 users. Still a great deal. I paid $300 for Cubase Studio 5 - the "lite" version of Cubase. If I want the full version I pay another $250. Logic 9 is $500. Ableton is $500 or more.

Here's the thing: Cakewalk was close to giving Project5 away towards the end. So they can't make too much of a discount for P5 users based on that. Plus, most P5 users own Sonar - a later version - so they'll upgrade via that route if they choose.

Already spent loads of $$$ on previous Cakewalk products dating back to ver,4. Plus I spent loads of $$$ on plugins, I've got enough fxs and content to blast the neighbors to smitherines and I'm only just get warmed up LOL!!

My interest is on Producer Edition!! I didn't say I was going to purchase Sonar Studio Edition, I was merely generalising and pointing out that it didn't included the Matrix, cos' funny thing is when HomeStudio.8 is released guess what? it will most likely include the Matrix (don't you remember when HomeStudio7XL was release it got the StepSequencer) due to very different release dates SonarStudio didn't have the SS until later that year! Bloody hilarious!!! Looks like the Matrix Reloaded (dejavu) all over again.

Thanks for your suggestions, I may skip Sonar Pro' 8.5.1 (wait for ver; 9) meanwhile I'll get *Cubase Studio*  How's it going with Cubase Studio, have you manage to crash it yet?

    True.

Also, there are many Sonar users who got P5 via some bargain discount. They would simply upgrade their Sonar via a P5 "special discount" even though they never really used P5.

I have authentic analog drum machine samples.

    Total cost upgrade form p5v1.0 to sonar 8.5 $300 + $349 = $649
Total cost to outright buy sonar 8.0 and upgrade free to 8.5  = $499

I have owned both sonar and p5 from v1.0 but I can understand why people feel slighted who purchased p5v1.0.

yes you are right bad choice of words on my part it is still being supported via email.

Oh yeah. Many times. But I'm running it on a marginally acceptable PC, 4 years old, loaded with other programs. Still, I'm able to achieve tight grooving hard-quantized MIDI sequences with it. I really like it. But I'm still considering the Sonar 8.5.x upgrade to run along side it (not both open at the same time of course).

It doesn't matter what computer you're running it on, Cubase still has some serious stability issues.  I'm running Cubase 5 (and 4 and SL3) on my more-than-adequately equipped quad core and it crashes repeatedly during any lengthy session.  It's an ongoing problem with Cubase - take a look at the SB forums.

As far as "tight grooving hard-quantized MIDI sequences" go, well the obvious contradiction in terminology aside (hard quantization is much different than "grooving"), there is no audible difference in MIDI sequences with Cubase, Sonar, Live 8, or Project5 on my end, whether I'm hard-quantizing them or not.  They each have their own methods of implementing groove and/or partial quantization, so they can't easily be compared in terms of how each responds to given parameters/values, but they're all very capable in that area.
