My 8.5.1 Impressions

I've played with 8.5.1 every day since it came available.  Impressions:

Pros:
  • Loop mode is MUCH smoother and more reliable than before. This is HUGE and very important improvement. Value: $45
  • It's FASTER. Feels like my Q6600 quad core has got two extra cores. Value: $99.
  • Cakewalk plugins are usable and I actually like to use them. Value: $40
  • New drum and vocal plugins are GREAT.  Value: $150
  • Bug fix update is coming. Value: n/a
  • Overall there are less crashes than in 8.3.1. Value: $50/week (reduced offline time)

Cons:
  • Motorboating has been totally gone. Did they forget to include it in 8.5.1?? Maybe it will be added in future releases.  Value: -$50
  • Some 8.3.1 projects crash when they are opened in 8.5.1.  Workaround: use 8.3.1.  Value: -$40
  • 1st time I used AudioSnap2 it crashed :(.  And it was very sluggish. First cut is the deepest...  Value: -$30
  • Sonar crashed when I tried to load new convolution file in SIR reverb. Maybe occasional or plugin's fault (CJ, it's certainly not caused by my outdated audio driver ).  Value: -$10
  • 8.5.1 does not find GuitarRig3 full version. (I haven't solved this yet, maybe plugin manager / plugin scan fixes this.) Value: -$10
  • Many Steven Slate samples vere in FLAC format and SessionDrummer3 did not find them. I decoded them. Don't know if they have to be FLAC... but something was wrong. Value: -$10
  • Some Steven Slate kits don't load fully - status bar freezes after halfway.  But not a big problem - I use Addictive Drums and real drummers. Value: -$15
  • Input gain bug (reproduced, fixed in next update) disturbs mixing. Workaround: assign bus output to some other place, then back to original. Value: -$20

- Is it worth $99?
- Yes.
- How about 99 €?
- Yes but today one Euro is 1.47 Dollars. It's not fair to use fixed EUR price.

However, Sonar Producer Edition rock more than ever before!

EDIT: Forum oddity: the 'Pros' section shows just like 'Cons' in message editor.

8.5.1 installs GR3 LE in the default install - based on my experience with 8.3.1 it will overwrite the full version - the solution was to uninstall GR3LE & reinstall the full version.

Yep, just uncheck GR3 Le when you install and you won't have the overwrite problem.

When you install 8.5 choose to NOT install GR3 LE and your full GR3 is untouched and works perfectly.

Did you really "ding" them $50 for the motorboating flaw being gone?  At first I thought you were kidding, but then saw the removal of value it got.  Maybe I misread or I'm slow today or it was a few layers of sarcasm deep and I just missed it...

Yea, I think it's a great update and well worth the price although I too have had major problems loading certain 8.3 projects into 8.5.  I've sent a bundle file to the Bakers for forensic investigation but no word so far.

What is the best way to get GuitarRig3 full version back?
I installed 8.5.1 with GuitarRig LE.  I did not guess that LE overwrites full version  :-/.

    LOL :D

It was layered sarcasm, indeed ;)
If Sonar doesn't motorboat anymore then I must to to my boat to hear that sound. More arduous.

So 3.5.1 doesn't do motorboating on your system and you did have that probelm before?  That alone would be worth the upgrade for me!

8.5.1 has motorboated exactly 0 times now.
    My setup: 2 x Fireface800 @ 44,1 kHz, buffer 512. Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi, 2 GB RAM, Win XP32bit, SP2.

But it's still early to say it won't motorboat at all - maybe I have not tried to push it too hard yet.
