Dimension and Rapture tutorials?

I use these two synths a lot but keep to the presets pretty much.  Yesterday at a session the client and I decided to try and tweak some things and I realized how little I know about these two awesome synths.

A quick romp through youtube didn't reveal anything major in terms of digging deep, are there other resources I'm unaware of for these synths?

I would like to get under the hood of these as well.

I have spent 4 years getting under the hood of the Fantom and do all my patch creation and edits there. I'm still finding I would rather go to the hardware because I am unfamiliar with how to edit in these synths.

Thanks Chris.  Have you watched these? and if so what would you rate them out of 10.

yep.. b-rock has posted info on the p5 wiki if memory serves regarding rapture.. and him and chad are about on the instruments part of the forum..

I'm "ok" with dim pro, but I'm sure others know more indepth stuff about it.. I guess part of it with both of them is knowing the SFZ format.

I think the author Stuart Dick knows an incredible amount regarding synths in general.  And he knows Rapture and Dimension Pro in and out.

    Cheers,

anything major in terms of digging deep
It doesn't sound like you're looking for the basics (although you may be ...).
Here's a few tutorials in .pdf format that would be closer to the intermediate & advanced categories.

Wide Load - Stereo Wavetables in Rapture 1.1/LE
Purebred Wavetables from Rapture / Dimension Pro
Hidden Rapture 1.2 Feature: EG to SG Editor

As Paul mentioned, the Instruments forum isn't a bad resource at all.  There's a much lower S/N ratio at that forum than ... well, you know - some other forums.  If you search for your particular subject matter (given the limitations in this search engine), you will get more hits than misses.  Very often, the original post starts out as (or develops into) a tutorial, with specific discussion on a particular parameter or property of the Cakewalk synths.  Here's just one example:

Phase & Pitch Shifting With All Pass Filters - Rapture / Dimension Pro

I suppose that this would be the place to slide in the Universal 120 - Rapture Expansion Pack and Construction Kit] that Chad Beckwith & I put together.  Not so much to shill the package, but it was set up partly as a learning tool for many of Rapture's superb features.  I can't say that I've been able to write any extensive documentation or tutorials for it ... yet.

But there are 1800+ files (envelopes, triggered step generators, Elements, .sfz files, LFOs, stereo wavetables); over & above the 'usual' preset collection.  You can load up (or drag 'n' drop) any kind of parameter preset, and completely change around the original preset patch behavior.  Hopefully, it'll become clear how each parameter type works in short order.

If you're just looking for presets (or some new targets for reverse engineering), go for the freebies: the Rapture section at PatchArena.  It's the motherlode.

w00t, thanks for the links folks!

The Cake people will hate this, but I didn't even think about the instruments forum.  I'm just too monogamous about my forum activity.

All of the documentation is in the Help menu. Press F1 from the Dimension properties page. This is true with just about every softsynth.

Okay now I know why F1 never worked. Because you have to click on the Dimension Pro logo first.

hmm.. to a point, I wouldn't say it's everything,  but there is stuff that a few here dug up that wasn't thought of or hidden functionality that users have brought to the surface.

Tom, have you had a chance to take a look at that Rapture filters tutorial I sent?
I read it several times through on the first night that you sent it, and many times since.  It's an excellent study, with a conversational, yet informative style that's in stark contrast to my "just the facts, ma'am" approach.  You should 'publish' it somewhere, although I don't think that the P5 Wiki is the best place at this point in time.

I was holding off on responding until I had a chance to comment on a point-by-point basis.  For example, the LFO travel, positive & negative Depth, based on the current Cutoff position.  Or, that unique & puzzling discrepancy between calibrations of the StepGen and EG filter settings.  Unfortunately, that never happened, because the 'situation' that I mentioned to you has gotten totally out of control and all-consuming.

It's too good to keep under wraps.  As you stated, this type of information was what you were looking for yourself in a filter tutorial.  I'll bet that there are many people in the same boat that would benefit from all of your hard work.

Put the Rapture Filters Tutorial in the Rapture section of the SONAR User Wiki.  I have copied a large amount of the synthesizer content from the Project5 Wiki over to the SONAR Wiki.  As Project5 becomes more distant and SONAR and its synth collection continues to grow the SONAR Wiki seems a right place to me.

I received a marketing email this morning from Streamworks Audio offering downloaded versions of their Rapture & Dimension Pro tutorial videos for $4.99 each.  Stuart Dick wrote and narrated both of them.  Streamworks production quality is not the highest, but Stuart's information is excellent.

I bought the Ozone 4 video tutorial from Streamworks and was not impressed at all. They basically just went over what each section was for, what each button did - nothing substantial as far as 'meat' is concerned. In other words, I had no 'ah-ha' moment and didn't feel as if I had garnered any additional knowledge beyond what I'd been able to glean just through using it myself. I also hated how the guy kept saying "perimeters" instead of "parameters". Subtle ennunciation difference, but annoying nonetheless.

    Still, for $5 ...
