Unhandled exception error
I am wondering if anybody here can duplicate what I am doing and if the same problem is incurred. I am running Sonar Home Studio XL Version 7.0 with Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3. If I open a Tutorial file (say Latin.cpw) and at Views>Synth Rack>click on + keyboard icon in the Synth Rack screen>Soft Synths and choose EDIROL VSC I then get the following message: Choosing “No” will just close the message screen but the Edirol plugin is inserted and opened. If the file is saved (obviously under a different name to protect the innocent) and if I close the program and then re-open it and try to open the saved file the same error message is displayed and, again, choosing “No” will close the message but the project will be loaded. I contacted Cakewalk Technical Support and they suggested I re-register the plugin by using the regsvr32 command. The command was applied but the same thing keeps happening. If I update Home Studio to version 7.0.1, run the same exercise, choose either “Yes” of “No” for the question for the error message, the program will just give me an hourglass that never goes away. i.e. neither the program or project is opened.

Windows media center has been known to cause problems with Sonar (all versions). especially since you've already talked to tech support and they've given you something to try,I'd go back to them and tell them it didn't work.

Thanks for the reply, Beagle. I did get back to tech support and currently waiting for a reply. I only updated to HS7 recently. I was using Music Creator 2003 prior to that and the Edirol plugin I was using did not give me that problem before therefore I will venture to say that Window Media Center does not have anything to do with it unless the newer Sonar products are really not that compatible with it (specially with what I described before regarding to the 7.0.1 update). Furthermore if I remove Edirol from the Synth Rack and insert TTS 1 instead the problem goes away (did not try this in the 7.0.1 version yet).

I would be sure and tell them about Windows media center. the problems that sonar had working with WMC were never addressed because it was a very short lived OS. most people who had problems with it ended up turning off the Media Center and was left with a standard WinXP home and their problems went away.

Hiya Michael, To clarify some of the Media Centre or is it Center comments - I wonder if I'm in the UK if Firefox's spellchecker will correct it differently . . . Cakewalk products themselves don't have any issues with Media Center, but most audio devices do. Media Centre has this bad habit of holding open audio & video drivers for Media Center activities which hinder performance. I noticed you're using the Edirol VSC, why not use the more recent TTS-1 included with Home Studio 7? Does it cause the same issues as well?

Hello Mr. Willy Jones, thanks for the comment. Luckily whether it is center or centre we all know what we are referring to. Deep down inside I much prefer centre because it is more in line with its Latin root centrum. In fact the Italians call it centro and the French centre. I am surmising that the English at some point wanted to distance themselves from the French and switched re to er. Is it metre or meter? What about litre and liter? As I mentioned in my reply to Beagle, if I delete Edirol VSC and install TTS 1 in the Synth Rack, the problem goes away. I do not have anything against TTS 1 (except perhaps the fact that the snare drum sound triggered by previously constructed Midi files ends up always being an electric snare drum sound instead of the preferred acoustic snare) but I do not see why I should be deprived of the use of the Edirol VSC synth. I was previously working with Music Creator 2003 and I was working with Edirol. If I upgraded to Sonar Home Studio XL 7 I did it mostly to expand my sounds library but this problem is working against that aim.

Hi Michael, I like centro best, lets stick with that one! I didn't catch your other post, sorry. I just checked with our email support folks, it looks like they walked you through a clean install of Music Creator as well. This may have gotten the VSC a little funky - try doing this: - Pop in your Music Creator 2003 disc
- Choose to do a custom installation (You may need to click the separate 'Options' button, I haven't seen the MC2003 installer in a while)
- Install only the Edirol VSC, none of the Music Creator components - nada just the VSC
If that still doesn't fix it, let Chad know so he can work through it further with you.

Hello Willy, I got a private message from Mr Steve Cox who basically suggested the same thing. Just to keep you and anybody else that might be following this in the loop I am cutting and pasting here my latest findings that I reported to Mr Cox. Hello Mr. Cox, Thanks for your help. I actually never did go through the process of removing Music Creator 2003 (I am not particularly fond of manually removing folders in the Program Files folder) but, for double insurance, I did do a DX Instruments only re-installation with the Music Creator 2003 disc (even though I had to deal with the DirectX 8 error message again). I opened Home Studio and tried to install Edirol in the Synth Rack and unfortunately I got the famous Unhandled Exception error message. I went into the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager and by highlighting DirectX Instruments (Dxi) in the Plug-in Categories column, I am shown that 5 were found in the Registered Plug-in column i.e. Cakewalk TTS-1, Dimension LE, EDIROL VSC, GroovePlayer and Roland GrooveSynth. Does this must mean that Edirol VSC is registered or is there anything that needs to be done? Incidentally, I also have some Edirol stuff in the Control Surfaces category i.e. Edirol PCR-300 and Edirol PCR-M30.

To anybody who is interested in this, the incident is now solved: Mr. Stephen Cox from Cakewalk Technical Support came through. Here is my report to him: Hello Mr. Cox, I am happy to report that copying and registering the Rvi01Dx.dll file that you e-mailed me definitely did the trick. The only extra thing I had to do was run the Wave Profiler because the playback was very distorted prior to it. In fact it worked for the Home Studio XL 7.0.0 as well as for the 7.0.1 i.e. the update I did immediately after finding out that the fix worked. If you followed this entire incident you will remember that, in the 7.0.1 version, attempting to open a file that contained the Edirol synth was simply impossible. So, needless to say I am a happy camper but also a little perplexed because, just by chance, I followed one of the links you had in you e-mail (http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/kbindex.asp) and there I noticed a link labeled as Home Studio 7.02 Update so I followed it and downloaded and applied the update successfully. I must point out that it was a bit tricky or deceiving because I was getting a number of messages saying that the original file was missing. At each of those messages one would be tempted to cancel the whole thing (the name of the file was obstructed by the message) but what was required was clicking on OK to all of them. So I did this additional update (under the Help>About Sonar Home Studio it is actually showing as 7.0.1.120 not 7.0.2) and Edirol is still kicking as…er, stardust. The perplexity stems from the fact that this update is not listed or mentioned in the following logical site: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/HomeStudio/Page.aspx?ID=SHS7 and also from the fact that directly above the Home Studio 7.02 Update link there is another link labeled Home Studio 9.01 Update. What is Home Studio 9? I thought Home Studio 7 was the latest version of the mid-level recording software product? I hope you can clarify this for me but regardless: Thank you very much for your assistance in this incident. Best regards, Michael N

Hi Michael, Glad to hear that you're up and running! Those updates you are referring to (7.02, 9.02, etc..) are for the very first versions of Home Studio (released well over 10 years ago). The version you have is officially "SONAR Home Studio". Please disregard any KB article referring to "Home Studio". Best Regards,
Steve Cox Technical Support Cakewalk
