Edirol FA-66 on Windows 7 64 bit?

Hi all! I've been away for a year and half (well, away from Sonar and music making, that is), but today I ordered the Sonar 8.5 PE upgrade (from Sonar 7 PE) so... I'll be back on track in no time.

During the last year I've bought another computer. Right now it's running Vista 64 but I am thinking about getting Windows 7 64 bit, which is supposed to be snappier and so on. Sonar is all ready for it, but the only 'problem' I face is: will my Edirol FA-66 work on Windows 7 64 bit...? I downloaded the latest Vista 64 driver (FA-66_winvista64_v106): there wasn't a Windows 7 diver yet. Anybody out here who owns a FA-66 and also has Windows 7 running? (BTW I am thinking about getting the Home edition: no need for anything higher and more expensive, I think). Does it work or are there still problems? Should I stay with Vista 64 bit for the time being...?

Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's.

I'm not running Windows 7 yet but I found some info about running the Edirol off the Vista 64 drivers in Windows 7.  Apparently this method will work for both the FA-66 and the FA-101.

As to the stableness of the product in Windows 7 I afraid I can't help.
Let us know how you get on.

Edirol is definitely working on it...they just released the 7 driver for my M-16DX.
Also the Vista 64 driver worked fine for me in the meantime.
However, the 7 driver is faster, i.e. I can lower the latency further

Thanks for the replies! The method found in vinski's linked worked. Well, the installation went fine and I can hear audio in Windows 7. I haven't tried it yet with Sonar because I am still waiting for S85.PE to arrive. ;)

Just an update to confirm what the doc said.  I had a reply from ediroleurope saying:

"We expect the [Windows 7] drivers [for the FA-66] to be available shortly (including 64-bit ones) but at the moment I cannot give you an exact date of release."

    So they're on the way.

Great news, thanks! I am glad it's working now already, but 'native drivers' and (hopefully)  lower latency are always welcome of course. ;)

Nice. I'm using the Edirol FA-66 on Vista but I'm planning on getting Windows 7 soon. So I should be okay until the driver gets released for it.

I have a related question to this "fix" which is explained in the linked article... I'm using the Edirol FA-66. I'm coming from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. If I install the Vista 64-bit driver after installing Windows 7, and check "The program worked in earlier versions of Windows..." as the article explains, do you think that it will work? Because right now, I'm actually running the FA-66 with the Vista 32-bit driver. I just don't understand enough about this stuff to know whether or not my scenario will be successful. Thanks for any help!

You need to download the Windows Vista 64-bit driver, unzip the file, right-click on the installer (setup.exe), choose 'Troubleshoot program' and then check 'The program worked in earlier... etc'. After that the installer will run. Connect the FA-66 when you are told to do so (do not connect it before installing the driver) and everything will be fine. I can tell, because it worked perfectly fine for me. ;)

Nice. Thanks for the verification! I’m almost on my way to 64-bit. It's gonna be a while until I get the OS though. I'll hafta report back with my results when I make it happen.

For the record, here's my experience with this workaround for installing the Vista 64-bit driver for use with the Edirol FA-66 on Windows 7 64-bit, step by step:

    right click setup.exe
    click troubleshoot compatibility
    click troubleshoot program
select "the program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now"
    click next
select Windows Vista from the list
    click next
    click Start the program...
click Reinstall using recommended settings (very important, I clicked “the program worked” like an idiot the first time and the driver did not install correctly)
    Follow driver setup wizard

After messing up the first install I had to follow the same exact procedure above to UNINSTALL the driver. Then I followed the procedure again to reinstall it and it worked. I haven't reinstalled Sonar yet. That's next.

Can anyone tell me why there's 3 devices listed as FA-66 in my playback devices? I don't remember it being like that before. Does that have something to do with the midi functionality of the interface? I don't know. I just selected one of them and set it as the default device and it's working.

    On to Sonar...
