New to Sonar (from Pro-Tools) - can't import Audio
I just opened my first project in Sonar 8.5 Studio. I'm building a backing track and wanted to bring in an audio .mp3 file to cut up, etc. When I go to "import-audio" and browse to the file, I click on play to preview it and hear nothing. Then, when I click "open" to import it, I get an error message that states "DirectShow Error (0X80040218) No combination of filters could be found to render the stream." I have been using Pro-Tools M-powered for the last year or two and used Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro before that. I just ordered and installed the Sonar Studio 8.5 Upgrade (from Guitar Tracks Pro/Home Studio, etc.). Do I need to have Guitar Tracks Pro (or Home Studio - I have both) installed prior to installing the Sonar Studio upgrade? I remember when I first installed Guitar Tracks Pro and Home Studio that there was quite a bit of things I needed to change to get everything to work and audio to be heard, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mp3 is not a desirable format. Mp3 use compression and thats horrible for audio. You may need to go into your options/global(audio data I think. Youll find it.) folder and change your import settings to something other than original. Cj

from a search on the forum, I found this: ...due to the windows [ filter being unregistered. sonar apparently uses this to import things like aiff and mp3s. what i ended up having to do was re-register quartz.dll in the windows registry. to do this, 1 start -> run -> cmd 2 cd c:\windows\system32 (assuming windows is on your c drive 3 type in "regsvr /u quartz.dll" (without the quotes. this unregisters quartz) 4 type in "regsvr quartz.dll" (with the quotes. this re-registers quartz) this fixed my problem. it should fix yours.

Yah, I'd use waves and use lossless compression to prep 'em for shipping. They'll still be pretty big compared to mp3's but full fidelity trumps email size in my book. Still, you should be able to import mp3s regardless. Check and see if you have another media app running or not.

Reece: Nice catch. I've never had to do this - any idea why some Windows installs need this registered and some don't? -D Beagle from a search on the forum, I found this: ...due to the windows [ filter being unregistered. sonar apparently uses this to import things like aiff and mp3s. what i ended up having to do was re-register quartz.dll in the windows registry. to do this, 1 start -> run -> cmd 2 cd c:\windows\system32 (assuming windows is on your c drive 3 type in "regsvr /u quartz.dll" (without the quotes. this unregisters quartz) 4 type in "regsvr quartz.dll" (with the quotes. this re-registers quartz) this fixed my problem. it should fix yours.

Interesting... My Audio Creator software can do this import without issue.... but Sonar 8, 8. 5 and X1 cannot. There is a work around. Go from MP3 to WAV in Audio Creator. (I was only using the MP3 as a Cover reference track.... then deleting it later.)

I've done a few online collabs and never had an issue importing MP3s into Sonar. Having said that, Monkeys Audio do a superb and FREE compression utility that will allow you to send WAV files over the interwebs. If the file size exceeds the maximum permissible size for sending as an e-mail attachment, there are handy file splitting utilities that will break up the file into manageable chunks. Otherwise, find a friendly hosting site that will allow upload/download of largish files.

What is the best way to send files sans mp3? Wav? If you're sending files over the internet, MP3 are the standard. I think what CJ is saying is that MP3 files are compressed and the quality is not as good as the original so if you're importing an MP3 into Sonar to start a project, your end result is not going to be the best quality. I can import MP3 into Sonar with no problem so you may have an incorrect setting or the MP3s you are trying to import may have DRM (Digital Rights Management) on them. i.e., they are copy protected.
