Steinberg CC121 DAW Controller with Sonar 8.5.2 ...... can ACT handle this ?

Hi CW
I originally posted this in the Sonar forum but it was suggested the Hardware forum might be better, so ..... here goes ....

In terms of a DAW controller, the  CC121 looks very appealing from a design and functionality perspective - see here:-

http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/hardware/cc121.html

Given  CW  do not have an equivilent product*, my question is:-

Can  Sonar 8.5.2   set up and manually configure  a  CC121  ?

Thanks,
Tim

*the VS100 has elements of it but has too much other un-needed stuff for those of us with exisiting setups.  A  " VS 50 "  with  CC121  controllabilty would be very popular I would have thought

Anderton did a review on Harmony Central - here is an appropriate comment -

"As to the CC121, although it generates MIDI control messages and can be used with other programs, it really comes into its own only when linked with Cubase - if you want a general-purpose MIDI controller, there are less expensive options. However, the beauty of the CC121 is that it's not general-purpose; it fits Cubase like a glove, and the sturdy construction coupled with an ergonomic layout promotes flying around the controls. I'm particularly fond of the AI Knob for editing effects and instrument parameters; it's just plain brilliant. The fact that it doesn't always work with non-Steinberg plug-ins is a bit of a downer, but I'm pleased that it does work well with many of the non-Steinberg plug-ins I tested."

Sounds like it will work, but is optimized for Steinberg which makes sense.
I agree that it would be nice to see a similar offering from Cakewalk/Roland.

    Hi Lance

    This is exaclty the problem.

There is no remotely similar or comparable  CW device.

I dont want to start a  anti-VS  thread, but for people with exisiting setups, there is  nothing / zero  in the VS  range.

The VS100 is packed with stuff I dont need or want and will never use but I would have to pay for.

I cant believe I'm about to say this - but the CC121 is brilliantly conceived and designed - it turns the software  into hardware in a totally tranparent way.  They have literally put the software into the controller exaclty as it is  - it has everything you need to track and record and nothing you dont - and it mirrors the software 1:1 .

If the CC121's  controls, knobs, faders, etc...... can be ACT-mapped to Sonar, its a no-brainer - especially considering you can buy one new at various retailers for under  ~$390 !

Believe me, if CW had a " VS50 "  [ for want of an example ]  that did for Sonar what the CC121 does for Cubase it would fly-out-the-door  -  I'd buy it and I dare say a bucket-load of  new and exisiting Sonar users also would.

Yea, there is something incredibly useful about the CC121 - direct knobs.  The VS700 is even better about dedicated knobs, but is, of course, incredibly expensive. The VS100 is good in everything it does, but doesn't have the dedicated SONAr control knobs.  I found the transport and fader ergonomic, but for EQ and other controllers not so good.  Teh great thing about stienie's unit is the EQ knobs so one doesn't have to think about it.  It is even more ergonomic than the VS700s control knob section, since it looks more like an eq controller.  A veritcal track controller strip w/ lots of knobs, great feeling fader like the vs series and a transport section and track switch button would be the ticket.  Esp. combined w/ a touch screen - combining the best of the virtual and tactile world.

Tom here ........ bumping for Timboe ........

An answer  or  advice  from CW would be really handy on this  -  surely someone at CW would have a pretty-good-idea  if ACT  can  "read and learn" the  cc121  and  telling us wont cost them a lost sale as nothing in the CW VS range is even ball-park similar to this unit.

    C'mon  CW ...... how about an "expert-opinion"  ?

Seriously - no-one at CW can even make a comment and has no idea if this is even possible  ?

    Timboe,

it is X-mas and this is a user forum.  Cake does stop by sometimes, but I don't think they check it every day, esp. when they are trying to get out of the office like everyone else this time of the year.  Besides, they are probably not big on giving a yea, buy our competitors products, even at Christmas.

I was hoping to get one to check out, but that deal fell through.  Maybe someone will pick one up and let us know.  I know what Craig said - but I read it as what is great is not having to program the damn thing or DAW to get it to work - instead it is good to go from the box.  I still think ACT would work - no reason it shouldn't (tho the devil is in the details).
