Smart Tool not working in X2 PRV

The Smart Tool won't do anything in PRV.  It changes to a note input curser when I try to enter notes but it won't enter a note.  It actually won't do anything.   I can choose other tools from the HUD and they work fine on the same notes but not the Smart Tool.  What am I missing?

Are you clicking and dragging to paint the note?

AS above. Double click to enter default setting note, drag to draw other length. If you are using drag to draw check your snap and intensity settings. If set to snap to measure at full strength trying to draw anything under about a 1/2 will give the impression it's not working as it is following the snap which on those extreme settings is the note starting point.

I've tried all this.  Snap is off.  Also if it were a snap setting I would think it would effect the individual tools and not just the Smart Tool.  Smart too does nothing but the  individual tool work properly.  Very strange.

All these work for individual tools but not the Smart Tool.  This has happened before and I thought it was user error but I can't see what I'm doing wrong.  Is there any global Smart Tool setting?

No, there's something strange going on because it should be working as per the instructions on that page. Is it just happening in your current project? Or is it happening in all projects? What happens if you start a new project, insert a MIDI track and try inserting some notes in the PRV?

Here is quicky video I made using a free screen recorder. It shows me selecting the smart tool and inserting notes in the PRV. The first few clicks I didn't drag the cursor and nothing happens. But when I click and drag the cursor I can enter a note, move it up or down and change the length without releasing the mouse button. Please forgive the jerkiness of my mouse cursor. The software was free, what can I say...

If this isn't working for you then, yes, there is a problem.

Ok it seems to be happening on some tracks and not others.  I can't see what's different.  I should have more time tonight to come up with a recipe and I'll post back then.  Thanks.

Did you lock the clips in the track maybe? That would definitely stop you from doing any editing.
Go into the Track view, select on the clip(s) you're trying to edit and then press Shift+I to open Clip Properties in the Inspector. Now look at the Lock parameter... is it active? If so, click it and choose Off from the menu.

That might be the problem and it would definitely explain why it works in some tracks and not in others.

But that should have the effect of locking "any editing" but only the Smart Tool is effected - not the individual tools.
