The audio equivalent of a Car Crash...
and I couldn't turn away my ears. Just got home from an evening out with the family in which we were subjected to a Soundtrack that I *hated* and yet couldn't stop listening to, it was SO BAD. The first thing I noticed was that it was really drecky and ridiculously overproduced covers of some early 80s power ballads by Heart and Journey, featuring some seriously *whiny/waily* vocals that were autotuned to heck and back... followed by a decent rendition of "Don't Rain on my Parade" (very difficult to sing, so I'll give some props there) and then some other, awful versions of silly pop songs. I couldn't decide if we were listening to "Kidz Bop" or a complilation of American Idol, or what... I finally asked what it was when we were leaving, and it turned out that it was the "Glee" TV Soundtrack, and the proprietess was pleased as punch with it. Oh. Mah. Gawd. Horrible. First time I've ever REALLY heard what the American public is listening to with (somewhat) producer ears.... I stay far, far away from Pop music on the radio, and stick with my alternative stations religiously. Now I know why.... Oooh. It was bad. And I have SO MANY friends that are insane for this show. People I truly admire and respect, too.... I may have to rethink my friend hierarchy.... 'Course, they don't know what I do. Dynamics lost the Sound War on this one. So sad.

Julibee.... my daughters (age 16 & almost 18) just simply love Glee..... They got the DVD of the series for Christmas.... every afternoon (almost without fail) when I walk in the den.... they have it playing on the tube. They have seen these episodes so many times they know every word...and every song. I have watched a few of the episodes with them..... I can see where your comments and critiques are coming from.....and I mostly agree... more about the story line (excuse me while I puke)....OK.... that's better... typical teenage girl type stuff.... teenage drama.... who's dating who.... who wants to date who.... you know the story line.... the cool teacher, the student that is in love with him, the idiot principal, the .... do I need to continue? No... I thought not.... I will say this good thing about it. Aside from the story line.... and the cover tunes.... The singers in it are all (except one) broadway singers...and really can sing quite well. They could all easily pass the Simon Cowell test. OK (swings a shiny coin on a string) ...you are getting sleepy, you will not remember that I said these things to defend the Glee singers when you wake up.......

Found this a couple of days ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TTf8-fWkYI Never heard of it, but apparantly it did quite well in the Billboard R&B charts. Apparantly T-Pain criticised Ron Browz for his use of Autotune on a hip-hop radio show

I'm very isolated from what the pop world likes. sometimes I'll ask my kids what they're listening to and sometimes I'll think it's not bad, but most of the time I just can't stand it. I know my parents were the same way about the music I listened to as well, tho. jules - I didn't get from your post where you were listening to this stuff? was it at a club? recorded music? I might be dense this morning but I didn't understand where your family was when this 'train wreck' occurred.

I rather like Glee. It is what it is--a campy, trashy soap opera. But the kids really are talented, and the production is slick. And the "Defying Gravity" diva-off was a fantastic moment. It might require knowing all the backstory to it, but when Kurt intentionally cacks the note, it really got to me. I tried to find a decent clip of it, give this one a try.

In a restaurant, Beagle....a nearly deserted Restaurant in a cafe court sort of setting near the movie theater. Zero customers. It was one of those nights where your favorite Baja style Taco shop has suddenly closed it's doors, and the kids are crying (they loved that place) and there's only 1 tank of gas (so we can't go wandering too far), and we are all really hungry and our blood sugar is dropping and everyone's cranky and holy cow, get us something to eat right NOW! :) One of THOSE nights.... dreck [drɛk] n Slang chiefly US rubbish; trash [from Yiddish drek filth, dregs] drecky adj Herb, You know - I noticed on the one Broadway number that they did the (female) singer was REALLY good (and I believe I mentioned it above, too). But I didn't like her in the Pop numbers - They did sound like Broadway stars, though. And I have no problems with that - I aspired to that at one time, myself. My issues were with Production and arrangement. And I forgot to mention this, and it's what really killed me.... I was taught at ALL COSTS not to "chew" my words... meaning the lyric "Don't You", is pronounced "don'T You" NOT "Doan-CHEW"... and by my choral directors, specifically. I have no patience for it from a "Glee Club" perspective. I think it sounds horrible and uneducated (and I don't mean in a musical sort of a way). Did I mention they covered "Gold Digger"??? I mean.... REALLY??? I just have no tolerance for "cute-ing up" stuff.... Yeah, I've heard that the show is great - and I'd probably like it, but I think it's on opposite something I watch on Showtime or something... I don't think I could stand to listen to the music though.

that's a BIG pet peeve of mine and has been even before I took voice lessons! but it's prevelant in a lot of music - makes me cringe every time I hear it! there's one song on a radio station that I listen to where a female vocalist is singing "I need You" and tho sometimes she'd sing it correctly, other times she'd sing "I knee Jew". so she's not even consistent in her own song! and instead of needing YOU, she "kneed" a "Jew"!!!

I will slang a word in a heart beat... my pet peeve is the precise pronunciation used by choral groups.... but I understand why they do that...so I let it be. That's another reason I will not join the choir. I never watched Glee before my daughters got the DVD's...and I heard them laughing really hard...so curiosity got the better of me and I went downstairs to investigate..... they obligingly rewound it so I could see what they thought was funny... and yeah... it was a hoot.... so I sat down and watched the balance of the show with them..... I will not go out of my way to watch it any other time than when they have it on and something is really funny.

come on... we all have one of those train wrecks in the archives... that we pull out and shake off once in a wile. convinced we have the answer, either technical or artistic, that will save it. we wouldn't dare play it for anyone but are convinced that one day it will be a masterpiece. meanwile each and every time we play with it, it leaves a larger feeling of blackness in our soles and we feel shame....lol like the first and last time you wall papered.
