+1 Albert Collins, and let's not overlook Roy Buchanon. The guy that plays for Sheryl Crow is also really good with subtle understatement, as was the guy that played on Shawn Colvin's big hit record a decade or so ago. Actually a number of great guitarists are mostly unknown, lost behind the big name acts they play for.

A few guitars, a couple of basses, a MIDI controller, a mandolin, a banjo, a mic, PodFarm2

Yes!  That album (if it's the phenomenal guitar playing i'm thinking of) is STEADY ON.   The guitar player is John Leventhal, Rosanne Cash's husband who's subsequently played on many big sessions because of that
great Shawn Colvin album.   Riding Shotgun Down The Avalanche is one of may alltime favorite songs/productions/arrangements.  The guitar solo in that song is pure gold.
Thanks for reminding me of such a great album.

Did anyone mention Dickie Betts?  Blue Sky is probably the best example of his melodic playing.

Gilmore came to mind right away. There's a note in Another Brick in the wall outro solo, that is my favorite note. It's near the beginning. There's a few phrases, then a little bit of space, then he scrapes up to that note. Love that note.

My all time favorite musician is Steve Vai.  Besides the fact of being the guitar player that he is, his music creation is incredible.  The fact that he can know what he wants done and creates it, it never stops him.  When I mean creation I mean he oversees the whole project from beginning to end and I don't think there is anyone else out there that can have that kind of control for production.  Well, ok maybe there are but in my eyes he's it from guitar playing to film editing to running his own record label..............

Enthusiastic +1s to those who named Gilmour and Knopfler.  But I'm surprised no one has mentioned Steve Hackett yet in this thread.  His playing has often been quite elegant.

Another individual not mentioned (and I don't recall his name) is/was the guitarist that played with Jethro Tull back in the day.

Not that I'm a guitarist and know good technique when I hear it.  But these guys surely have made music that has moved me.

Hackett is probably one of the worlds top classical guitar player.

His work with Genesis was, in my opinion, nothing spectacular - but he's taken acoustic playing to a level not before seen in an  Englishman.

Check out albums like Bay of Kings, or A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Here's another one I didn't think of right away, but gives me chills whenever I hear him play: Jerry Douglas, best known for his dobro work with Union Station backing Alison Krauss. Listen to it on some good headphones, as there is incredible subtlety and nuance going on.

Totally agree, his playing on this is just gorgeous;

Yes, I quite agree.  Hackett's solo outings were what I mostly had in mind.  I do like Genesis, but if I'm going to gush about anyone in that band it would be Tony Banks on keyboards.

I love almost everyone  mentioned before.  One guy I will always catch on tour is Leslie West.  He is about the tone, not the speed.  That is fine with me.

He told me all his early recording with Mountain were with a close miced cranked Marshall 50 2x12 combo.  I still love that sound.

Thanks

Great thread BTW!

I've read all the posts and I don't believe I've seen
  • Gary Moore - I first heard him because of his metal and hard rock stuff (with Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynott) but I reckon his blues work makes him a contender for this thread.  For those not familiar, check out Still Got The Blues and Parisienne Walkways (w/Lynott) - and what great tone!
  • Brian May - great sense of melody, another guitarist who knows how much space to leave.

Enthusiastic +1s to those who named Gilmour and Knopfler...

They were both in Bryan Ferry's studio band when he recorded Boys & Girls in 1985.  Gilmour actually played with him during Ferry's Live Aid set.  It was a shame the album was so synth-heavy, there was some TASTY guitar playing on it!
