Session Drummer 3 - Why won't my Open Hi-Hat samples close??
When I load a kit into SD3 and play a Hi-Hat MIDI riff into it, the Open Hi-Hat samples keep "ringing" - i.e., they are not being superseded by the ensuing closed Hi-Hat samples. Anyone know the setting to make the Open HH sample stop when the closed HH sample is triggered?

Anyone know the setting to make the Open HH sample stop when the closed HH sample is triggered? Its two different notes: one hi-hat note plays the open hi-hat and the closed hi-hat note cuts the other one off. For example, on the TTS-1, the open is Bb3 and the closed is Ab3. Playing the Ab cuts off the Bb.

Yes - I understand, and the MIDI is using F# as the closed, and A# as the open. Normally it works fine, and it works well with my own SFZ files, but for the Steven Slate Led Dry kits in SD3, the Open hi-hat was being muted by the closed when it came back in. I suppose it could be the MIDI file - but that seems unlikely.

Okay - I took a closer look. It's the Steven Slate Open Hi-Hat samples - they're quite lengthy (unlike other Open HH samples which tend to be short). So, I need some kind of command for an SFZ file that will "choke" this open Hi-Hat "off" when the closed Hi-Hat is triggered on. Anyone know the code?

I don't think such a code exists. I tried it using the OldZepKitDry and it cuts off the hi-hat just like the TTS-1 does. I used Bb for the open and Ab for the closed. I'm using an actual keyboard controller to play the notes.

I remember that this problem had existed since the days of sound fonts. Normally F#3 (close HH) or Ab3 (pedal HH) should silence the Bb3 (Open HH). When that happens, I just used another sound font, another drum kit.

Hmm . . . this is a strange one. I would hate to have to replace the Steven Slate HH's just on that basis but if i have to, I have to.

Actually, the closed hi-hat is Gb not Ab. Ab is the Pedal Hi-Hat.

I think this is definitely the fault of that drum kit. It's possible to silence the OHH but it's more work than should be necessary. For example, in GS mode (with a Roland SoundCanvas in pure midi), I can use a sysex (let me know if you want it) to assign another (or same) drum kit to use any channel (other than channel 10). For example, channel 11. Place the track with only the OHHs in channel 11. And use CC7 or CC11 to silence the OHH at a specific point in time. I never do that myself. I only think of a way to do it but it's more work and I just used another drum kit. Edited to add: That was almost ten years ago. I'm surprised to see that this same problem still exists to this day.

Work fine for me too. Both F# and G# choke Bb. Tho, reading your post reminded me I thought I had the same problem too. Now, however, all seems fine. I don't know if I'm mis-remembering or not. Maybe just try re-loading your kit and see what happens?

I'm not familiar with session 3 but in most I've worked with there should be a way to "group" a number of instruments (kit pieces) so that they don't sound together - typically open and closed hi hats. If group setting is not in the synth it will most likely be on the drum map.. Rgds Alan

Ok got it! When you rt click the hat in Session Drummer 3 in order to load a sample into it, do pay special attention to what you find written under you cursor. Take note of what note numbers it says you'll find open, closed and pedal hat on. Then load a hat sample from the the bundled kits (I choose a closed sample). In the piano roll, opt to see note numbers instead of the black and white keys. You'll find that loading just the closed hat sample has loaded its corresponding open and pedal samples too. And, the cut off works just fine. This should also work from your midi controller. I work from the piano roll though. Good luck.
