A good off-the-shelf computer (like the Dell you are thinking about) CAN be tweaked to run an audio program like Sonar very well. I am using a modified HP with 2GB of G-Skill RAM and a 3-year old AMD Athlon 64+ processor, and it performs nicely... until I try to use too many soft-synths in a project. It also isn't as quiet as I would like it to be, since it is the same room I use to track open-mic sources. I am looking at replacing it soon.

    The advantage(s) of buying a built-for-audio system:

    > They choose the best hardware for the purpose
    > They use ultra-quiet fans to keep the CPU cool.
    > The OS is tweaked and trimmed to a "lean, mean audio-only machine"
    > In many instances, sound absorbing lining is installed inside the case
    > You won't have the headache of matching an audio/MIDI interface - the right drivers are already loaded and tested

It's really your choice. But if you decide to go the AUDIO PC route, may I add another choice to the list: Sweetwater's Creation Stations. There are several models available, and one of them might fit your budget.
However, if you are planning on the new machine performing multiple duties (internet, gaming, etc), you might do as well with the Dell.

    Happy Hunting!

    Joel

    lol i give up!

look my studio pc was £500 from ebay (about $800 i guess), is i5 750, 4gb ram, 1gb nvidia graphics, win 7 x64. i'd love to be able to afford a pc from Synergy or inta-audio or whoever in the UK, (and bear in mind specialist audio PCs are WAY more expensive here in the UK) but i couldn't. This PC works fine, but hey i'm a bedroom musician recording one track at a time, not requiring to push it too much. if that's you, then the Dell will prob be fine too.

A lot of us have been using Win 7 x64 with no problems. I'm pretty sure some of them are using Dells. There must be a way it can work for you, Andrew. Can you be specific about your issues?

    very weak power supply
    very slow memory
    have to upgrade video
    small case
    no support (not really)
no support for audio, no software/hardware intergration
no backup/hard drive manager/recovery software (for making your own images after you install all your stuff)

    920/6gig slow ram/2 x 500G/nvidia 240/upgrade to 2 yr warranty/wireless KB+mouse comes to $1479 @ Dell

for $300 more you can get a better product from a daw builder!
with full support for your audio endeavours.

Scott is absolutely right on every point.  I've own Dells, and they work fine for general use, but a DAW is much more demanding.  A year ago I went through exactly what your are going through.  I spent a couple of hundred dollars more than what the Dells were selling for, and it was worth every penny.

The support alone is worth the difference.  I don't think Dell would be able to help you with advice on drivers, latency, or any of the other aspects of digital recording.

My machine just runs--I don't have any problems that others have, glitches, or pops, "motorboating," or crashes.  My DAW just works, and I just record music!

Email Jim or Scott, or call them.

So has any off-the-shelf I've ever used!
And... the most I ever spent on one was £500.

"Scott is absolutely right on every point. "

Scott- "no support for audio, no software/hardware intergration "

Scott's statement is not entirely true....

You can see my system below, and the change wasn't planned. I was perfectly happy with XP 32bit. But it happened.

The problem I had was UA-101 (USB) was sharing IRQ (16) with video. Nothing I could do as I'm not smart enought to be making registry changes. So I called Dell support.

I was on the phone 3 different days and the first two were about 4 hours each day. Didn't get anything done. Spent most of my time going "huh?". My fault I guess not being able to understand heavy foreign accents.
The third day it cost me $230.00 to get the "extended" support that Scott state's they don't have. It covered three PC's for one year. It was going to cost $129.00 to cover the one with problems for ONE TIME!
So forward I go...now after 4 hours tech support hangs up one me. Thinking it was line issues I called back...about 4 hours later...hung up again. Called back and wanted a refund for what I just purchased because tech's were hanging up...well they wanted me to please try again they were so very sorry...I did...now after 12 hours!!! (not including the other 8hrs) I'm with a guy I can understand and he is trying very hard to resolve the problem...he updated the BIOS on a two month old PC and says that's all he can do. Bye.

    So yeah, Scott is right.

Lucky enough that the update changed the USB ports somehow and the UA was now on it's own IRQ address. Problem solved.

I can say, excluding not having drivers for a few things I use...this is a fantastic performing PC. Anybody that has messed with Spectrasonics knows how taxing they are. I can use Omni, Trilian, Stylus at the same time! CPU doesn't hit but maybe 12%. So far the worst/weak link is the UA-101 USB.
And even though the Dell was purchased for my grand-daughter (Xmas) and she couldn't use it..I'll never buy another Dell for me or anybody else.

Whatever Scott or Jim charge is saving people more than money in the full scope.

the Dell studio leavea alot to be desired way too weak a power supply and many other things

    so that leaves option 3
