MC5 no sound
I'm almost fed up with the software, and giving it one last shot. I have my amp hooked up through a first act input/output usb cable. I hear alot of white noise coming through my amp, and I have tried every usb slot on my cpu they all sound the same. I can't record anything at all. I used to be able to record without a problem, but then I got an "unhandled exception error" so I re-installed the program using windows xp compatiblity mode. I could record without a problem for several days, and now I hear white noise and can't record at all. I did download a plug-in called gsnap (auto-tune) right before it quit working. I deleted the plug-in and I still can't record. I'm not really sure what other info you need in order to help me. I have vista, which has realtek HD audio (not sure if that's considered a sound card or what). Driver mode is mme 32bit. Playback is through Realtek HD speakers. Recording Realtek HD microphone. This is what it's set on now, and also what it was set on when I had no problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

those usb audio cables are trouble every time! try resetting the aud.ini file by going to OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED and click on the button that says RESET CONFIG TO DEFAULTS. then you'll need to go back to OPTIONS>AUDIO>GENERAL and change back to MME driver mode and the run the wave profiler again

One of the worst ideas is to believe that this is easy and any old hook up will work. Sadly the marketing makes it seem like a well ... cakewalk! Don't get frustrated and miss out on the fun you can have. If you are really interested in this as a hobby get a decent interface to plug into. Go to beagles website and see some of the suggestions. Also go to musician's friend and you can look at some good ideas. So many of us here struggled at first then purchased a real recording interface and the whole world opened up.

I have my amp hooked up through a first act input/output usb cable. Presumably from the amp's line out or headphone out. If that's the case, you could have just connected it to the line in of the sound card and saved the $40 you spent on that USB thing. If you connected it to the amp's speaker out... you could have fried something.

I agree..... the USB cables are a mess. They are cheap and that's the lure of them. And they will work under the right circumstances..... like in a lab where they are designed...by the engineer.... But in the real world.... your studio.... it's best to get a dedicated interface like was mentioned above. Once you do.... we can help with the setup advice... keep it simple...... you will be amazed at what you can do with the right tools and gear. And then it does become a "Cakewalk"

Thanks "Beagle" I followed your instructions to no avail. Any other suggestions? Everyone else, I'm just a ol Georgia boy trying to record a couple of tunes. Don't have that kind of money to spend on an audio interface. The software itself has been a learning curve (when I could actually record atleast), and I'm not sure if I could take on an audio interface as well (sounds really intimidating). I really hope'd I could some how resurrect this usb cord, but it sounds like that won't happen. Guess my recording days are over. And I plugged my usb cable into my aux output jack on my amp, so I don't think I fried anything. Thanks to all for trying to help. If you can think of anything at all that could possibly fix my situation shoot it at me!

the audio interface is not intimidating... it IS the solution.

Try plugging the amp's aux out directly into the sound card's line in with a standard cable. You should be able to record that way, so your recording days are not over. You might need an adapter of some sort to fit the 1/8" jack on the sound card, but Radio Shack will have one. If the sound card doesn't have a line in, but does have a mic in, try that and double-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select line in from the Windows mixer; deselect mic in.

Wow. Why hadn't I thought of that before? Thanks "57 Gregy". It does have a line in, so I will pick up an adapter after class tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works.

We all understand the cost of this hobby. But respectfully any hobby worth the effort will cost you something. If you love to four wheel drive you need a Jeep or truck, raising bird dogs you need well, .... Bird dogs. Hunting requires a shotgun or rifle. Tennis a racket and some fancy tennis shoes. You get the picture. If you want to record you need to have the proper tools. At the bare minimum you need a cable to connect the guitar to the sound card line in. Better is a small mixer to allow monitoring the mix and existing tracks at a single source. Best is a simple interface. They do not need to be super expensive. Something like this will do. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Lexicon-Alpha-USB-Audio-Interface?sku=245507 just make sure that what ever you end up with has drivers for your computers operating system.
