I Got A Rhodes!

I just got a Fender Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano Eighty Eight!

So me and my guitar playing friend have been slowly putting together my bedroom studio, complete with Sonar 8.5.2 and various other pieces of musical equipment. Got everything working great, the new computer, Sonar, figuring out how to use it all and stuff. So we start talking about my Yamaha keyboard, and he casually mentions "I got a Fender Rhodes in my storage unit."

I said "Whaaaat???"

"Yeah, I got it from this girl for $200 bucks." he says without blinking an eye.

"Holy Cr&p!!! Let's go get it NOW!" I exclaim.

And so here it is. What a cool instrument! Sounds great running through my Universal Audio 710 Twin Finity pre amp going into Sonar. I love it!

I am stoked!

I sold mine years ago  Just couldn't lug it around to jobs anymore. I wish I had it now to use with Sonar.

I sort of traded, half-gave my 80's era MKII to my engineer.  He so wanted it for his project studio and it was just gathering dust here.  I did make him promise to give me first right of refusal if he ever sells it.  I had it during my Nashburg years and many famous and infamous fellers have played on it...as well as my ownself;-)

Yeah ... I played live on my Rhodes for over 10 years, a Mark II.  It now just sits in my studio and like yorolpal it's gathering dust.  Well, I play it sometimes just for the heck of it.  Still great !
Would I sell it ?  No way ...  it'd break up the Hammond A100, PPG Wave 2.2 and Hohner Clavinet D6 "quartett"

Glad you like it so much A1MixMan !

One man's garbage is another man's treasure.

My avatar is a very old picture of me playing some oldies - a Wurlitzer electric piano (which I hated) and a Hammond M-2 organ (which was a bear to lug around), an Elka String Ensemble (which never stayed in tune) and a Micromoog. All have been sold. The only one I wish I still had was the Micromoog, but then again I have a Minimoog plug-in that sounds better, but I can't twist the knobs on it. I used to borrow a friend's Rhodes which I liked although it too was a bear to lug. Weekend warriors don't have roadies. I used to plug it into a Crybaby wah-wah for that early Joe Zawinul / Weather Report sound.

    Just waxing nostalgic...

    Enjoy!

I did a project for a friend recently with a 73. Fabulous jazz keyboard player. I'd like to post some of it, but they were standard covers and I'm not sure if my SoundClick account permits cover songs?? (Anyone know?) The Roland Dimension D chorus plug from UAD sounds amazing on a Rhodes for a ballad (check out the UAD website for a demo).

But has it had over a six pack of beer spilled into it by a Tennessee frat boy standing on it singing "Shout" while I, in similar inebriated condition, comped in a manical frenzy in the basement of the Deke house after whuppin Alabama's ass for the SEC Championship while about three or four hundred like minded young dimbulbs sang along???  I think not, sir.

Ain't that the truth! Mine looks like that, but it's still cool as hell. I have it in the living room and run a 50 XLR to the preamp in the studio. It's nice to have another intrument in the studio to play with.

Very Cool-I played in a trio for years with 2, yes 2 Fender Rhodes on the stage and me in the middle with my guitars. We used a drum machine at the time. One of the Rhodes guys played bass on his synth. Looked cool and worked very well. They both had small synths on top. Those were the days-great music-Great look!
    Great Find there!~

I had a Rhodes ....in 1977 I pulled it out of my trunk on a Below 0 (F) degree, windy, Chicago night and inched my way up my parents snowy/icey drive-way while bear hugging it and lifting with my foot, (It was as heavy as I was and that was the only way I could navigate it while in it's case).  When I finally got to the top I slipped,  fell on top of the Rhodes and slid all the way down to the end of the drive-way.  I picked it up,  put it back in the trunk and later went out bought a wurly.   And started practicing the trumpet!!!

Neither keyboard was ever in tune with all keys working for any considerable length of time.

God bless anyone who wants one of those things.....

That's very kind of Ya A1, ol pal.  Most all of those are either remixes (remangles is more like it) or tracks I've created for other folks.  I'm currently working a new original project and hope to start previewing tunes soon...check back ever now and again.

Back in the mid to late 70's most pro band keyboard players used to hogarth more of the stage than drummers !  With 6 (yes six !) different keyboards in three stacks of two in a "U" shape + Leslies was like ... err, a standard.
In the early days when we had no roadie it was a real bind to lug all that heavy equipment around, but we were so starving for gigs, we didn't mind.  And boy, were we THIN ... not like the fatsos now

Later, I knew I should have taken up harmonica ... even with a flight case it weighs only a pound or so !

I've recorded a Rhodes a few times.  Did one a few weeks ago that didn't have the speaker cabinet, just line out.  It sounded great dry, but we ended up running it through a Sherman Filterbank for most of the takes-- that was really fun.  Very cool gear combo for Muse/Radiohead-style FX.  I was bummed because the song with the most trippy rhodes FX ended up getting cut from the album and never got mixed.

Why does mine say "input" below the 1/4" jack hole? Shouldn't this say "output"?

Well, it plays fine coming out into an amp or direct into my preamp and into Sonar, I never thought to input something into it, even though it says input, I just thought it was wrong.

Input is actually output (only !).  Funny, I'd forgotten about this, but remember now that it initially confused me also back in the 70's.

I played one of those new Rhodes  -- in a bright fire engine red.

What a waste of money that thing is. It sounds pretty good but felt terrible -- like it could just spontaneously catch fire for no reason. The whole thing just smacks of shiney and cheap.

That actually would't bug me so much if it wasn't $5000 freaking dollars. Its not worth half that.
