Effects to AVOID???

A few weeks back I had some trouble with a reverb: The sinus reverb. It maxed my CPU and crashed my system. Now I am not looking for a solution for this, as I used another reverb instead, but the recent "Softsynths to AVOID!" post got me thinking:

Can anyone think of any VST effects to avoid?

I have had crashing problems with Cakewalk's FXPad. I would get the BSOD and it would tell me it's dumping the physical memory. The I'd have to wait for that to finish so I could reboot.

Assuming you're running Windows XP (or 2000), it's got to be a hardware or driver problem to cause a reboot or BSOD. The most damage application code can do is to bring about a visit from Dr Watson, or just make the application vanish (*poof*), or become unresponsive (hang).

    I use FXPad without problems.

Some effects can cause SONAR to crash if you have "Autosave every n changes" enabled (note that using "Autosave every n minutes" is not a problem), but

A couple of (old) effects to avoid...
    - Digilogue BlueStereo DX (VST is ok)
    - FreeverbX (again, Freeverb VST is ok)

I keep meaning to send an email to db-Audioware but their plug-in pack incorrectly reports it's latency to Sonar. Therefore PDC for the DB plugs doesn't work.

Just something one should be aware of when using the effects.

    Peace,

rhythmdog - You can turn off dumps if you want (in XP) by going into Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery Settings / Write debugging info = none. Thorne

Thanks, Thorne! I changed that setting. Could it be my audio drivers? I'm using 2 Gina cards and since they are the older 20 bit versions, Echo Audio has only released beta versions of the drivers. Could that be my problem?

I was about to post the same problem. I too have reverb problems. The level maxes out then i have to exit and go back in sonar. I just finished another project without using reverb and there were no crashing problems from start to finish. Will they ever fix the bug? I liked that effect so much.

This would take the all time record for digging up old posts. Glad I didn't use DAW software back then. Wonder what happened to those members? Don't recognize any of them.

fali do us all a big favour and start a new thread.

Be sure to pick the correct forum, This is for older Sonar, If you use X1 or 2 there  is a new forum.
Also include your system specs, Audio interface, OS version 32 bit or 64 bit, you'll get more help that way.

Multiband Harmonizer by Melda Productions makes my projects to stall totally. The other Melda multiband FX work fine.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
