Cymbal swells?

Anyone know any tricks to get those swells drummers get while using mallets on say the ride cymbal or what ever, usually found in ballads?

Some drum programs have swells already sampled that are of decent quality, of course you probably know this.  I have played 16th notes and messed with drawing in the velocity on the Piano Roll view and have had some decent success.

Whilst it isn't really a cymbal swell, and is more suited to electronic genres, I've had some good experience with recording a cymbal crash as audio, and then reversing it.  A digital version of what Pink Floyd did on 'One of These Days', if you like.
