New to Sonar
[size=3 font="times new roman"]I am using Sonar 4. I am new to home recording. I do not if am setup correctly, I am looking for a tutorial that will walk me through the set up process. I am sure that I have the correct equipment, cannot get sound from my instrument to the Sonar program. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to have keyboard to record and playback?

Hello jwh, Thank you for responding. I have read the manual that came with the program, in fact, I studied it like a text book. However, I believe that I am missing something, and I can not figure it out. My instrument is a guitar and I also would like to use a mic. I am using a Fender amp it is a G-DEC 30. It has MIDI out/in, it has right in and a right out I believe these connections may go to a mixing board. It has Audio left and right in ( red and white jacks). I have an external interface, M-Audio fast track pro, (if you Google it, it is the first picture on the result page) with a USB port to connect to a computer, and of course I have the Sonar ver. 4. My midi out from the amp goes into the in on the interface, and the midi in on the amp to the midi out on the interface. I have the audio outs from the interface to the amp and the USB to the computer. I have installed the drivers for the interface and set the control panel and it gives me a connected indicator. I have selected the drivers midi in to the interface and the selected the computers sound card to the midi out under the Options- MIDI devices. I have armed the track and I get nothing. Of course I know that there more to it but rather than dragging it out I just gave you the basics. I have had this equipment for about three months now I am beyond frustration, I am numb from endless research, posts, experimenting. I have almost had it!! If you can help in this capacity, i will be eternally grateful. [size=3 font="times new roman"]

Your question leaves it unclear whether you understand or not what the MIDI is used for with your amp. According to the specs of your amp you can load midi-songs into your amps midi-module and play your guitar on them. Do you know what midi is? There most likely is no Sonar-specific tutorial for your amps midi functions. I've never seen/used one like that amp. You don't tell us how you've connected your guitar. You can not record normal guitar with MIDI-connections. MIDI has no sound, it is only instruction data for synthesizers. You feed it into Sonar via a midi-keyboard or directly to the Piano Roll View with your mouse. Then you use a soft synth in Sonar or your amps midi-module to turn it into audible sound. For your guitar, use the audio connections and most likely you'll have better luck. And remember, that you use mono tracking for mono sources. Guitar and vocals (except for a choir) are mono sources, don't confuse things with recording them stereo. The guides at tweakheadz.com include "all" the info you need about home recording, midi , effects etc.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

If you can help in this capacity, i will be eternally grateful. kalle's right- the MIDI for your amp is ONLY for controlling the amp sim FX INSIDE your amp, you can use a MIDI controller (like a keyboard) to send MIDI messages to your amp to control the FX and tones from the amp but that's specific to your amp and you'll need to learn from your amp how to do that. you CAN connect a MIDI cable up from the fast track pro MIDI OUT and then connect that to your amp and you can "automate" your guitar FX and amp sims using MIDI messages in Sonar. but this is not something that sonar's manual or tutorials will help you with since this is specific to your amp. you will have to find out from your amp documentation what MIDI messages will control which functions, then you can add those MIDI messages using a mouse in the Piano Roll View of a MIDI track, send the output of that MIDI track to your fast track pro, have the cable from the fast track pro connected to the amp and then when you hit play or record, as the messages are sent out to the amp, the FX or amp sims will change according to the MIDI messages you are sending it. you can also control FX and amp sims in your amp by using a keyboard or other MIDI controller device. to record your amp using a mic, just connect your mic up to your fast track pro, select an audio track in Sonar 4, select the correct input on the fast track pro for that audio track, arm the track and then hit record on the transport. it's that simple.

Right now... you want to disconnect the midi...... forget about it for now..... Stick with the audio. Learn it first. the guitar goes to the amp, the amp lineout... not speaker out, LINE out goes to the Maudio. Maudio usb to the computer. VERY IMPORTANT... do not connect the speaker out to the interface.... it will likely cause lots of foul smelling smoke..... if the amp doesn't have a line out... use a mic or a direct box. Have you run the wave profiler to properly set up your soundcard? You should have selected the ASIO drivers and select the Maudio as the primary input and output device for recording and playback in the options audio menu. Insert a new audio track, set up the track inputs from the Maudio, output to the master buss to the Maudio soundcard. Now arm the track and hit record. See if that works. Ignore the midi stuff for now... just get it recording audio first. Audio has to work first before the midi is capable of working at all. And I'm thinking that the midi on the amp is NOT a midi output that is .... ummmm ... usable. it might be for control of amp functions or to allow you to play a midi tune through the amp... but to be honest... in all my decades in the guitar world, I've never heard of a midi player in an amp..... but I also don't know everything that's out there either.

You know.... I do recall seeing those..... now that you mention it. However, that doesn't change my post... the advice is get the audio working first... then mess with the MIDI.

Agreed he's go to plug into channel 1 of his m-audio. Then using only the m-audio control software, play and look for a level. Then open Sonar, go to preferences>audio, select the correct ASIO drivers, M-Audio, with the correct channnels. I think the FTP only has two anyway? Then tackle the midi. I once met a guy, intelligent chap too, but didn't know anything about recording. He just plugged his keyboard into his interface with a midi cable (not the audio 1/4 in calbe) , and said "how come no sound?". I didn't have the heart to tell him that midi didn't carry audio through it.
Sonar, Les Paul Studio, FTU, puter, plugs.........

okay guitarhacker, I like your suggestion. I understand that midi connections only carry information, not sound. On the control panel of the maudio in the channels box i have 5 options outputs 1 & 2 an 3&4, third is S/PDIF input (stereo), fourth is balances input 1 and last balanced input 2, which should be selected?

I am looking for a tutorial that will walk me through the set up process. I am sure that I have the correct equipment, cannot get sound from my instrument to the Sonar program. A guy named Brandon Drury has written an extensive guide to home recording that he sells as a downloadable pdf. But the first chapter - on setting up - can be downloaded for free. Get it here. To be honest, I haven't read the whole book, but I have read the free chapter and if the whole thing's that good I think it would be an excellent investment for a beginner.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

....."I have read the manual that came with the program, in fact, I studied it like a text book" really? does the cracked version have a manual? CJ was being kind, it's close to 6 years! I guess if it took 6 years to read the manual then perhaps you forgot some of the first chapter!
