Quiet Case?
I'm about to do an upgrade to my system, and am thinking about a new case also. It looks like the Antec P183 is a pretty good case and claims to be quiet. Anyone have any experience with this case? Know of any other really good quality and quiet cases? I already have a power supply that's quiet (Antec Phantom) so that isn't a consideration. Thanks!

no such thing as a quiet case. its all about what you put inside it. (fans) with that said thinner metaled case especially aluminum will introduce vibratory noise easier. thicker metal will not be as bad. good air flow helps as well but most cases are good enough a silent system can be made from nearly any case

The P183 is a nice case... If you use quiet components, it'll be quiet.

I can confirm Jim and Scott's comments. I have two P180's. One is very quiet. The other makes some noise because it has an older motherboard that has some hot components that need lots of airflow. Most hard drives will be pretty quiet using the stock setup. I like the case, it's fairly easy to build a quiet system using it--if you do the research. I have purchased parts--mostly fans and heatsinks--from Tom's source End PC Noise.com. I can recommend them as far parts go. Here's a resource: http://www.silentpcreview.com/ Good luck, Jan

It's metal sides are metal-plastic-metal sandwiches. That sounds like it should help dampen any vibrations. cheers bud

I also was checking out the silicone pad mounts for the fans. Silicone is an excellent dampener normally. Do you have any experience with these? http://www.thermaltakeusa...spx?C=1336&ID=1705 Thanks! bud

tyacko I own this one: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=caterpillar.html It is very quiet. I'm glad I bought it. Tom Hi Tom, That's a nice case - I had seen it on another site. I checked my local computer shop, and they carry the P183 but not the Nexus. I paid to have a case shipped once a long time ago, and I don't think I'll do that again! So I'll probably get the P183 unless I find another shop in town that carrys the Nexus, then I'll be checking both out, and any other suggestions anyone has. cheers, bud

Another option is to include a fan controller in one of your 5.25" bays. This can control all your case fans. You can also use speed fan to control any fans (including your cpu cooler) that are attached to your mother board. Your MOBO probably has some fan controller software with it also. These options give you full control over the fans in your system and let you monitor temps also. As long as you choose an ultra quiet PSU, you should be well on your way to having a neat silent PC.

At low RPM fan speed, the noise dampers really won't have much effect.
