Are Glyph hard drives worth the money?

My WD" my passport" external portable hard drive died recently, so today (thinking that a hard drive was a hard drive) I went out and and bought the cheapest external desktop hard drive I could find (a Comstar 250 GB something or other). Unfortunately the connection cable broke before I could even plug it in for the first time!
At this point, I'm discouraged and annoyed. I don't want to have to buy a new hard drive (let alone lose important data) every six months and am now considering ponying up for a 500GB Glyph GT 050 Q and be done with it. But what exactly am I paying for? Is it really an exceptional piece of hardware, or am I just buying their impressive replacement and data recovery guarantee?

uh, so take the new HDD back and get it replaced. or it must just be a generic USB cable? glyph make really great hdd casings, but unless ur recording at olympic stadium or need 4 different connection options, seems a bit OTT. they use seagate hdds...so buy one of their own!

It wasn't the USB cable. It was the power supply cable. Not one, not two, but three of the metal connectors broke off as I was trying to plug it into to hard drive for the first time. So no, I wouldn't replace it with the same brand.
In my internet research this afternoon, the general consensus as far consumer level hard drives is that the difference between the different brands is not a question of if the hard drive will fail at one point or another, but when.

The darned things are so cheap, why not get a Seagate brand external drive.  Or better yet, a USB powered 2.5" drive - no power cable at all.  Just got a Seagate 320Gig USB powered drive at Best Buy for $80.

Are they worth it, yes, in my opinion, they are.  I have lost 2 external hard drives with important information because of power issues.  The Glyph drive enclosures have a very powerful PSU with an internal transformer.  There is little to no chance a power mishap, like plugging a 24v DC adapter into a 12v input will fry the drive (like I said, happened to me twice).  That security in itself is worth the extra cash, especially if you plan on recording professionally.  Data recovery costs around $400-$1000 dollars, better to be safe up front.

If you want the best possible external HD.
Buy a high-performance (32MB cache) HD... and put that in a nice external enclosure.
That's as good as it gets... (takes about 5 minutes to assemble)

I agree, and that is why I ended up buying the Glyph, and quite frankly I feel that it's money well spent. If I was a hobbyist, even a serious hobbyist, I might have considered an alternative (and thank you to all for your suggestions) but I have paying clients so I think the security that comes with a Glyph was the right decision.

+1   I was looking at an enclosure last week that had usb 2 & esata. Both the usb and sata cables were incuded as well as a break-out for the esata from the sata on the mb. 55 bucks.

Glyphs are definitely worth the money. Fast, quiet and if you get the Key drives and an enclosure you can swap out drives at a moment's notice. I use 'em & love 'em. And for the GT series, no wall warts - it's a standard IEC AC power cable.

If I have a high performance drive (which I have here, ready to install, a  Seagate 3g 32 MB cache) how is it going to be fast connected via USB? surely it's maximum performance will only be achieved mounted in the case and connected to the mobo via sata? (I don't have external sata capability).

Correct, the HD speed would be limited when connected via USB.
Does your system have a free internal SATA port?
If so, some of the better external eSATA enclosures include a bracket that has an eSATA port that connects to one of the machine's internal SATA ports.  (You just screw the bracket into an empty slot)

Thanks Jim, I think it does, I'll check that out. It would certainly help keep the heat down in the small Shuttle case, there's room for a second drive but I'm a bit concerned about that.

I've actually been looking at your web site, very tempted to get a new 'puter, I'm waiting on Digidesign to get drivers out for Windows 7 64 bit then I will do it.

It's not just drivers on Avid/Digi's part - ProTools will have to go 64 bit and that doesn't show any signs of happening any time soon. Which is a shame, but one of the strengths of PT is not jumping on every thing that comes down the pike immediately - they have a user base that doesn't take kindly to being on the bleeding edge. Look at the discussions over on the DUC about Power PC users feeling like they've been left for dead.
