I read a description somewhere about the Bonham drum sound and how it was done. No mystery, it turns out, just really big drums (26" kick) hit really hard in a big room with distant mics.
The song sited by the OP was recorded in 1993, at the tail end of the big-snare era usually associated with the 1980's. That effect is achieved with reverb, probably a high-end Lexicon. And lots of it, but gated so that it stops just short of the next hit. There is also a pre-delay so that the initial hit isn't obscured by the reverb.
I think they've also dialed up some 200Hz boost to give it a deeper tone. Use the biggest (e.g. 14-14.5") and deepest (6.5-7") snare your drum sampler offers. It's one thing that's missing from the stock Superior Drummer set that I use, so I'll often bring in the 14x7 Rockstar snare from Jamstix as a replacement when that big sound is what I'm after.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
