I have to purchase an MP3 Encoder in order to save as mp3??!!!!
I tried saving my session as mp3 and get a message saying I have to purchase an mp3 encoder. This is the kind of thing that is really annoying and pushes customers away....

Nothing like finding out the hard way. I believe there are some free encoders available. I think Fraunhofer requires that companies that provide MP3 encoders license them. So there is a fee associated with providing this process. Cakewalk has I believe decided to pass the fee onto those who would like to encode in MP3. I'm not one of them so their policy suits me. Apparently patent holders have declined to enforce license fees on free and open source encoder/decoders so I believe there are quite a few out there for the having.

I use the LAME encoder, which is free and works with Sonar, in SonarLE. But you have to unload the LAME encoder, which is open source software, and install it. As to quality, I doubt if the ones for sale are that much better.

Audacity is a very cool free audio editor that will do it http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ It's the poor man's Sony Sound Forge, and it's most impressive to say the least!

Audacity can do mp3's but also needs an encoder, and most Audacity users use the LAME enconder, so it's OK. But it is convenient to produce an mp3 from the Sonar project. So, once the LAME is downloaded, the SAME encoder, even from the same folder location can be linked to Sonar.

Burn is when you make a cd, rip is when you take songs from a cd. When you rip a song you can choose the format you want under the rip options. You can also choose the quality of the mp3. Instead of pointing media player to a cd you just point it to the wave file on your computer, usb flash card etc. Early versions of media player may only allow you to rip from a cd.

Kristan, NoKey Certainly up to XP Media Player Version 10, you can only rip (or to be exact, convert CDA index + PCM format to MP3 or WMA format); you cannot convert WAV format to either MP3 or WMA format. XP Media Player 11 may do so, but I seriously doubt it since a media player is not normally an audio file converter as such. As Media Player 11 initially had such a bad press I never upgraded, so someone else needs to confirm this for you. You can get some more information here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/music.aspx Hope this helps. Cheers Alan T

Thanks Allan T, That's what I thought, ..but am not up to date on those things since I used them a long time ago. Saving MP3's from Sonar, using the free encoder such as LAME, for me, is the most convenient way.
