The Curious case of Dimension and Rapture

I'm running Producer 8.5.3 on Windows 7 x64 on a Quad-Core Dell Inspiron 530 (4G) mostly without any issues.

I have a number of NI instruments from the Komplete 5 and 6 set and regularly use the 64-bit plugins for Kontakt, Absynth, etc and so far (6 months on) I have had no issues. I've also been using Kore (which as you know is still 32-bit) via the bridge and it seems to be happy enough.

Yep, all seems good. That is until I try to bring Rapture 64-bit or Dimension 64-bit into a project, then I start to experience issues with stability of the entire application - well perhaps that's unfair to SONAR - the circumstantial evidence would seem to suggest that Rapture, and to a lesser extent, Dimension are a little less stable then their NI counterparts, which is a shame because I really love Rapture's sound.

On the whole, Rapture seems better at the fall-down trick  than Dimension, but it does happen with them both. I am spending some time now (see below) to try and figure this out, but from past experience, there doesn't seem to be any obvious discernable pattern or cause.

The 32-bit versions of Dim. & Rap. don't seem to fare much better via bitbridge. I should point out that I am using Rapture w/1.2.1 hotfix and Dimension 1.2.

I don't think SONAR itself is the problem - clearly it's quite happy using the NI products. The only difference as far as I know, is that the NI products are VST, and Dim/Rap are DXi. I don't know enough about the dynamics of this to point to this as a cause.

I am gathering as much info as I can and plan to submit bug reports to Cakewalk in the next few days. I've waited this long only because I've been able to work around the problem by using the NI synths, but now I have more time to spend trying to diagnose the problem and report it.

I guess I really would just like to know if anyone else has seen similar events on their own systsems - i.e. one set of plugins working just fine but Dimension or Rapture falling over...

Stephanie.

Maybe you need to double-check your VST folder configuration.  Dimension and Rapture are both available in a VST flavor.  By default, the Cakewalk Instruments will install to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\vstplugins... I know that Sonar can scan multiple folders for VSTs, just make sure that you know where those VST Instrument files (dimension.dll and rapture.dll) are and add that folder in the prefs.  No Sonar in front of me now, but when I have it open I will add menu structure to get to that setting in Sonar.

Hi:  Several of us are having problems with Dimension Pro and Rapture on 64bit OS.  Cakewalk says to use the DXi versions as they are more stable in 64bit OS.  Yet, last night I ran all my Komplete 6 Synths as VST plugins plus Omnisphere with no problems until I inserted a Dimension Pro, which crashed my Sonar 8.5.3 yet again.  I have reported the problem to Cakewalk, who have 1) said they know there is a problem and 2) said there is NO problem.

Please make sure you report your problem to the Cakewalk problem reporter so we can get this fixed.

I'll second what Cecelius has said.  I'm hoping they can get the issues worked out and issue a patch soon.  I am especially fond of Rapture.  I have uninstalled the 64-bit version for now and use the 32-bit version with BitBridge a bit, but not enough to really trust it if you know what I mean.

Please do send your problem report through the link that Cecelius has linked to... the more of us who do that, the more the programmers will have to work with.

I also had to uninstall 64-bit Rapture and go with the 32-bit version.  I have not noticed any problems with 64-bit Dimension Pro.

i concur that Dimension Pro and Rapture DO NOT WORK on x64 systems (and yes, i did the whole bug report process like 8 months ago, and still no fix!)

3.5 Ghz AMD 6-Core/16 gigs RAM, Roland Quad-Capture, Win 10, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Komplete 10, z3ta+, Z3TA+ 2, Rapture, Maschine 2.7 (MKI & Jam), Melodyne 4 Studio, Ozone 4, Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2, Schecter Damien Elite, Fender Sonoran w/TronicalTune Plus installed, etc

How did you go about this?
I just got the Rapture Elite upgrade.
Which is 1.1.  is this a 32 bit or 64 bit?

I also applied the 1.2 update and was given a choice of 32bit or 64 bit.
I installed the 64 bit and it crashes with Sonar 8.5.3 64bit. When I try to install the 32 bit rapture I can't insert it,  it say's that it isn't properly installed.

Do I need to install 32 bit Sonar 8.5 and use the 32 bit rapture with it?

You might need to uninstall Rapture 64.  That's what I did, but I'm not 100% sure it's necessary.  Make sure you are running the VSTi and not trying to use the DXi version, as you definitely won't get that working in SONAR x64.

There are also a few synths that don't like to run inside SONAR unless you either launch SONAR as Administrator or have UAC disabled, so that's another possible cause for the kind of message you describe.
