Digital distortion on playback after first STOP/PLAY.

Before I start tearing hair and stripping down my workstation to try and find the cause, has anyone else experienced this annoying problem?
Even with a basic four track audio mix in Sonar Studio 8.5.2, with three tracks muted, when I hit STOP on the transport mid-track and then hit PLAY again, I get distorted audio from the un-muted track when played back through the VS-100. If I then hit STOP and PLAY again, the audio then plays back correctly.

The VS-100 driver version I have installed is v1.0.0. Is this a known problem with this version of the VS-100 driver or indeed with Sonar Studio 8.5.2? The latest version of the VS-100 driver on the Cakewalk site is v1.0.6, but Cakewalk don’t give any reasons for the driver update and the distortion issue is not mentioned in the Sonar 8.5.3 release notes.

Many Thanks

    Alan,

    Can you describe the distortion?

I had my first case ever last night of bad audio behavior from the VS-100.  I imported an mp-3 from band practice and it was highly distorted on playback.  Pitch and tempo were correct, but playback sounded like it was being modulated by something ugly around 100-200 Hz.

At first I thought it was the mp-3 or the import.  But I had the same sound on a known good project.  Restarted Sonar a few times, but no change.  I power failed the VS-100 and the problem went away.  Hoping this is an anomoly.

edit: Distortion was not related to stop/play.

    Hello Murray

Sorry to hear you too are having distortion problems with the VS-100. I'm pleased to say I've fixed my distortion problem now, but unfortunately I don't think my fix will help you:
I use a pretty hefty 32 track digital mixer front-end that is built into my audio workstation and the output of this mixer is fed to the S/PDIF input of the VS-100.
My problem was due to using the workstation's built in digital mixer clock as the timing master for both Record and Playback in Sonar Studio 8.5.2. Switching Sonar to use the DIGITAL (VS-100) S/PDIF input as the timing master in Record and 1-2 (VS-100) for Playback has fixed the problem.
Cakewalk/Roland are not entirely off the hook though; IMHO I should have been able to use the digital mixer as the timing source, as long as I used it for both my record and playback timings.
It might be worth you just checking that you are using the VS-100 as the timing master in your setup.
    Hope this helps.

    Alan,

Thanks, but the distortion I had wasn't related to clock setup.  Since it went away with a power cycle and seems to have been a one-time event, I'm not too worried about it.

On s/pdif, the VS-100 doesn't have an s/pdif output, so there's no reason that I can envision to use the s/pdif input as a playback clock source.

    Hello Murray

I was referring to having to set Sonar up to sync to the VS-100 wave drivers instead of my workstation's wave drivers in order to fix the distortion on STOP/PLAY. Because Cakewalk say you shouldn't use wave drivers from different equipment for recording and playback in Sonar I had to change both settings to the VS-100. Hope that explains things better.
