headphones

Just as a matter of interest, what headphones do you guys use in your studios?

I never use headphones in isolation for mixing but use them for recording acoustic guitar and vocals. I need a new pair but don't want to spend a fortune. Any recommendations at the budget end of the spectrum?

Thanks

YC

Stay closed back for best isolation/bleed control.
Out 3 different brands of closed back cans I own, I prefer the Panasonic RP-HTX7-K1 Monitor Headphones the most for tracking.

I'm pretty happy with my Sony MDR-7506's.  I only use them for tracking mic'd instruments.  Everything else is only through the monitors.

I like these myself. Can be had for around $60 a set. Good sound. Good isolation fort tracking. They aren't bulletproof like some other models but replacement parts are easy to order. If you don't throw them around too much you should get a long life out of them.

The first pair I ever bought I wasn't sure I liked them cuz I was used to other things. I bought them on a recommendation from someone here in this forum. But they have proven themselves here in my busy studio over the years. You would be hard-pressed to find anything as good in this price range. The closest competition is up in the hundred dollar range (Sony, AKG, Sennheiser, Shure, etc).

I have Sony MDR-7506s and AKG K240s which are both around $100.  Not sure if that what you'd consider "budget" but you can obviously spend a lot more! The AKG's are semi-closed, but when you're not worried about bleed they make good tracking headphones and are very comfortable. I haven't tried the Senheiser HD-280s but as you can see they get a lot of recommendations.

Sennheiser HD280Pro for tracking. Excellent isolation, reasonable comfort and a weak bass response make them ideal for that application. Just don't ever use them for mixing.

For late-night mixing, I use AT ATH-M50s, the sibling of the ATH-M40 recommended above. Balanced and reasonably flat frequency response, average isolation and very comfortable. Just don't push them too loud, as they start to get grainy-sounding at high volume.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I've got two pair of Sony and two pair of Koss, all closed back.  I like the sound and comfort, of the Sony's better.

Been using a set of  Sure SRH440's. Not a totally flat response but they have worked for mixing/mastering and the end result sounds good in my car, SUV and home stereo.Plus they can take a heavy load when I'm tracking on my drums( they have real good isolation)

I used to be a big fan of the Audio Technica ATH-M40fs but the leatherette ear cushions kept flaking off on everyone who used them and after a couple of years the drivers started crackling.  They sounded nice for mixing but for having other people come in and use them a lot for tracking they didn't hold up.  I got a pair of KOSS PRO/4AA's and really like them; very heavy, no fake leather ear cushions (100% pure vinyl), good isolation, lifetime warranty.  I don't know about the sound for mixing but for tracking they work and hold up well.

I also recommend the Sennheiser HD280 pro's. {erfect for tracking because of the good isolation, and the sound is good enough for tracking, and the price is right.

Sennheiser HD280's here too, I have three pairs, I love them and my visiting project studio fellow musicians do too. I use a pair of Sennheiser HD 580's which are not closed back for some late night tracking.

I use HD280's for tracking, & HD25's for mixing - they can be a bit toppy but you get used to it and learn quickly not to compensate too much when making HF decisions.

I definitely agree.  Sometimes, while tracking the high end becomes a bit too much for me, so I'll roll off the hi's on my monitor mix a tad.

on the HD25's I assume, not the HD280's. The 280's are quite warm to me, especially compared to my Sony 7580's

Yes - it's the HD25's that overcook the top end, the 280's are a lot warmer.

I use the AKG-44 closed back headphones. I think it's just about $20-$30. (I bought mine here for $40, so í regret checking the price on the internet just now. I could've bought some shirts and guitar strings with $10, jeez.)

Check out my band's song on YouTube!
