Roland V-drums are more $$$, but there's a reason for that. Most agree they provide the best triggers/pads and durability. Durability is something to consider. Buy once and save in the long run. They are built to take it.
A Roland TD-9 kit is not much more than an Alesis. Don't know whether the Alesis kits will stand the test of time as they're fairly new. They might, but then again I've had a lot of Alesis gear over the years (all gone now) and ALL of their stuff I had crapped out over time. I can't say that about any Roland or Yamaha gear I have, which still works like new - and some of the stuff is pretty old.
I just picked up a TD-9 kit and somes "extras" for it a couple of weeks ago. Liking it a lot so far. If you're looking to use the kit for Superior, BFD or something, then the sounds in the brain won't matter. Everything else will though.
