Should I be using my Yamaha mixer for the Mic Pre(s) ?

I have a yamaha MG166FX mixing board that I had been using for live shows to run my PA system.  I am just now really getting into recording & I was wondering...  Would I be better to just continue to use just the mic preamps in my M-audio fastrack pro, or would running my mics into the mixer (for more pre recording control) then into the fastrack pro interface be better?  I was thinking this may giv e me the ability to kinda pre-tweak the Eq of the incoming signal before it even gets tracked.  But do you think it would degrade or enhance the signal?  Here is a link to the mixer I have so you can see some of the specs on it.  http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_MG166FX%20Mixer_-1_10052_10002_-49964588

Thanks in advance for your input!

No harm in trying. It would be fun to compare them and see what you think.  The rest of the mixer might not be as good as the preamps so I would try the direct out or insert first so you get just the preamp.  If it doesn't have jacks for preamp out you might need an insert cable, one plug will be the output.  If the tip is the output on the insert jack you should be able to use a standard 1/4" mono cable.  If the ring is the output you might need an insert cable.  Or if you are handy with a soldering iron just make some cables.

Edit: I just downloaded the manual from Yamaha and it looks like the tip is output so any 1/4" mono cable should work so get a preamp out from the insert jack.

I don't think there would be much differences between preamps in the 2 units, but you could try.  As far as EQ - the yamaha board stuf for live sound is good for live usage, but I don't think it would work really well for recording.  I have found that the virtual stuff is usually better than downscale hardware.

Going in, of course, the EQ might solve some problems, esp. for subtractive use like rumble and give some more headroom.  But you are probably better off solving that at the source.

Give the board method a try, tho, if you have the time.  Maybe you'll like it and you'll never know otherwise.
