Where is Interpolate?

Cakewalk recently upgraded me from Sonar 2.0 to Sonar LE 8 to allow me to use the VST features of EZDrummer.  That part is going great but where is Interpolate?  Is it gone from #8?  I want the volume of all midi notes  in a highlighted section that are under 60 to be pushed up to 80.  Can that not be done in LE 8?  Any advice please on raising the volume of midi notes in a particular highlighted strip?

As much as I love SONAR, the developers have an annoying and disappointing habit of removing features when "upgrading" the software. Interpolate seems to be another casualty in this process (along with Groove Quantization and other useful features).

Of course, even though the remove the feature, the don't necessarily remove the references to it in the user's manual. The manual for SONAR Home Studio XL 6.2.2. has four entries for "Interpolate"--and they all refer to a menu item that doesn't exist in the actual software.

Interpolate may live on in SONAR 8 Producer or Studio...but I guess we'll never know. Things like this aren't mentioned in any Cakewalk comparison table I've seen.

Again, I'll ask the developers to stop punishing those of us who upgrade. Add newer, better, or more full-featured items to "Producer" and "Studio" versions, but please stop removing features!

Thanks planetearth... but who knows how I might raise the volume of my midi section (just the highlighted section, not the whole track) in light of the absence of interpolate?   I obviously don't want to manually increase each note in the Event List - there are 400 notes - it is a drum piece!  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I also discovered I can't actually edit it in my old Sonar 2.0 as they don't allow a midi export only an audio export... I currently use SONAR 8.5.3 Producer Edition and it does have "Interpolate" and "Groove Quantize" on the Process pulldown menu.  If those don't exist in SONAR LE 8.5 but you need them then an upgrade is in order.

I don't know why they choose to remove certain of these features from LE version to LE version.

Well, while the SONAR gods have taken away our Interpolate, they have seen fit to leave us with "Select...By Filter". You can use that to select any note below the value you specify, and then use "Process...MIDI Fx...Cakewalk FX (don't ask me why both "X"s aren't the same)...Velocity" and change the velocity either to a preset amount or by a percentage.

SONAR 2 doesn't allow MIDI export? Can you open the files and copy the MIDI tracks into SONAR 8?

Techead, with all due respect, an "upgrade" to SONAR 8 Producer Edition is not practical--or even realistic--if you just bought SONAR 8 LE. It's not like you can get your money back on that and then throw another $250 - $300 at SONAR 8 PE. Besides, most people don't need everything else in PE, and they don't know what's being taken away from them until they install Home Studio or LE. And by then, they own the software and can't return it.

And Cakewalk isn't removing features from LE version to LE version. They're removing features from LE versions to higher versions, in some cases! SONAR 4 LE came with Groove Quantization. SONAR 6 HS XL does not, yet it's supposed to be an "upgrade".

This would be like if Microsoft had a spell-checker in Works' entry-level word processor, but suggested you "upgrade" to Word so you could do more. Only then do you find out that while you can do more...the spell-checker had been removed.

Don't get me wrong: I love Cakewalk and SONAR. I just don't care for the politics of product features.

I suppose you're talking about the velocity of the notes?? If so, bear in mind that velocity is very different from volume. Increasing velocity may launch a totally different sample, thus changing the track in way you did not intent. The proper way to control volume is automation with volume envelopes.

planetearth, no, Sonar 2 DOES allow a midi export, but not from Sonar LE 6 which has a 6 in its name.  If I copy a midi clip in LE 6 I cannot paste it INTO Sonar 2.0 (where I would then use the interpolate feature and bounce it back to Sonar LE 6 where my song is).  Also, the Export Midi Clip window is greyed out.  I have the feeling, planetearth, that LE 6 which Cakewalk upgraded me to in order to use the EZDrummer (which I like a  lot) does not have the features of Sonar 2.0 and is enormously less advanced (perhaps all the LE versions are).  When this song is done it might make sense in the future to only use the LE 6 to carve out a drum track with EZDrummer.  Once that is done, I am better off in Sonar 2.0 doing everything else!

It's hard to imagine that SONAR 6 LE (or 8 LE, which you mentioned first) is less advanced than SONAR 2...but I guess it could be, thanks to Cakewalk taking out some of the better features. I have SONAR 6 Home Studio, and I can export MIDI clips, but my copy came with Session Drummer 2, not EZ Drummer. Interesting....

Is there no way to have both versions of SONAR open at the same time and just copy the MIDI data (not the clips; just the actual notes) between them? The clips have more data than the notes do--data that SONAR 2 probably doesn't understand.

Still, you might find selecting the notes "by filter" (as I described earlier) to be faster, once you get the hang of it. It would be a shame (and a waste of money) if you couldn't use the new version SONAR as your primary production tool.

I don't know if there are any CALs that could help you with this, but this page has quite a few, with links to many more. I've seen some rather specific CALs on these pages, and wondered where I'd possibly use something like that. You might find what you need in them.
