Usb microphone input onboard soundcard output issues

Trying to record multiple tracks. The usb mic input signal is responsive immediately ont he screen, no seeming delays. I create a drum loop, record the audio track over it and they are completely out of whack. Can you get latency issues from a direct usb microphone....or is my issue hearing the drum loop delayed so my tracks dont match..................do i need to spend money on a usb interface that sidesteps the onboard sound output so i get correct timing? Please help
