RME Fireface Question

This should be an easy one for anyone that owns a RME Fireface 800/400. If I were to add one to my setup, it would connect to my self-powered KRKs. All I see though on the front-plate of the Fireface is the Output Gain next to the headphone connector. Is this Output Gain knob only for the headphones? If so, then how do you control the output gain of this unit to the KRKs? With the software?

Broken pencils are pointless.

On my FireFace 400 I use the software mixer, but it looks like the single knob is a rotary encoder type with a switch that allows you to change so that it can be used for a variety of different functions within the unit.  I've never used the knob, but I think you can switch it from headphone out to 1/2 out, etc.  I found the mixing console of the FireFace far more flexible although a little bit hard to figure out at first.

On a side note, I highly recommend the unit.  I was using a Mackie Onyx 400f before I got this and the RME has much better round trip latency and I think slightly better sound.  I noticed a subtle difference... some could argue placebo effect, but I really think it's better and has more clarity in the mids.  Plus it does seem pretty solid in Windows 7 x64.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

Thanks. The reason I ask this question is because I also use my system for other things as well. For example, just to listen to some music. If I had a Fireface it would be used as the primary system audio interface and I want easy flexibility to raise or lower the output gain, preferably without having to go through a software interface. Therefore a mechanical volume knobwould make it easier to work with for these casual usage instances.

+1 for the FF800 quality and sound.  We use a Presonus Central Station passive speaker control to the powered monitors.  That may be overkill in your situation, but any passive speaker control would work.

i control the volume to my jbl's with the software.
i like that you can build presets in the rme ff800 software.
i have one preset for the jbl 4326's, another that goes to a power amp, and a third for headphones.
