Phantom power question about using 2 mics...
Well, I just purchased my 1st Large condensor mic (a Shure PG27-LC). Not the worlds greatest mic I am sure, but it is a huge advancement from using the dynamic mics for vox like my 57, or 58's, or my beta mics. On to my question... I have an m-audio fastrack pro interface which supplies phantom power with one switch on the back, so I will assume that it's sending phantom power to the mics out of both Channel one & two's inputs right? My point is I'd like to try recording guitars with a sm57 close miked, & my condenser back a bit or as a room mic but I don't want to cook something by sending phantom power to the 57 that doesn't need it? So if I use an adapter & plug the 57 in on channel 2 with a 1/4 inch jack instead of xlr with that keep it from getting phantom powered? What's the thing to do here guys? Thank you!

Phantom power will do nothing to hurt your dynamic mics. Don't sweat it. You're fine.

He meant to say don't sweat on your dynamic mic when it's phantom powered. I think. Maybe. ? :-)

Yes it doesn't effect it at all... but there was that one time that I did a 4th of July festival in the rain and fog and 100% humidity with dew forming every where and one particular ill maintained tascam monitor mixing console with global 48vDC seemed to fry 6 or 7 SM 58's during a set change... they didn't work until they work after that.

ChuckC really? It doesn't effect it at all? Correct. That's why they call it "phantom" power, the other gear can't tell it's there. However, this assumes everything is wired correctly. If there is a bag cable there could be a problem. Almost all shows have a mix of powered and non powered mics all hooked up to the same board and all goes well.

ChuckC really? It doesn't effect it at all? Nope.... you're good to go...... with dynamic mics. Some ribbons can be seriously damaged by phantom power if I understand correctly, so use caution with ribbons.

As already indicated, dynamic microphones are not affected by the presence of phantom power. You have nothing to worry about there. You can safely plug both your SM57 and Shure condenser into your interface with no worries at all. It is true that ribbon mics can be damaged with phantom power and that is something you need to be aware of if you ever acquire a ribbon mic down the road. Some of the newer ribbon mics are designed to accept phantom power though so if you ever shop for one, just be careful what you buy. You can convert a standard ribbon mic to accept phantom power by using a Rode Power Plug in-line which adds more gain to the signal. In fact, that Power Plug works great with the SM57 too. I would not use a 1/4" adapter because those are typically "line level" inputs and you might find you get very low volume signal through them compared to the XLR input. If it's not a balanced input then you also lose the noise cancelling characteristics of the balanced circuitry. I've never used that particular Shure condenser mic but I'm sure it's fine. Shure makes great products. Have fun!

"Phantom" power will, however, enhance "ghost" notes. But you have to have an ektoplasmic radiation gauge and the Murray/Parker Jr. scale to even detect it. And you also can't be afraid of no ghost....notes.
