Video preview upside down and no thumbnail in Sonar 8 trial
I have the free Sonar 8 trial and it seems I and freinds will leave Cubase and others for this excellent program. But still we have it under trial. Now, when loading a video into a project it shows up alright int the video window. BUT...it is upside down!! And I can't get the thumbnail view to work at all. I loaded an PAL mpeg2 720 video. The buttons dont seem to be clickable, even the dropdown list doesnt seem to work when I try to tik the Show thumbnail line. Anyone had the same problem? Martin, Sweden

Hi and welcome to Sonar. I've just completed my first composition to video and had similar problems to what you are experiencing. I found that if I pressed the play button 1/2 way through a project it would invert the video, however sending the "now time" back to 1 (ie the beginning) fixed it. Strange thing is does not happen all the time only now and again. The good news is that although you get this weird going's on the video does export correctly otherwise my space shuttle ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX3Yupmanlg) would be taking off downwards :) Unfortunately I did not get the thumbnail preview to work either, so hopefully someone else can answer that part of the question.

Interesting! This "sending the "now time" back to 1 (ie the beginning) fixed it", how do you do that? I see the now time on the transport control. You mean resetting it to 0.0?

Or do you mean dragging the Now slider to the beginning and starting again? Didn't work for me anyway.

Hi! A and B are there but not clickable. C works. F is there. E and D doesn't show, just the text "---Video Thumbnails are currently hidden---" on the track. ????

Yes by resetting the now time to 1 I mean to basically send the line to the start. John - I just tried that on my project and it doesn't work just blank. Wonder if it has anything to do with the file format that the clip is in?

I have the free Sonar 8 trial Which version is the trial? Are you on Windows 7 64-bit? I seem to recall that they fixed the upside down video in Win7 x64 at some point. I use mpeg2 NTSC DVD format videos with Sonar all the time. The only problem I have with the thumbnail track (and it's a known bug to Cakewalk) is that when you zoom in far enough (but not far enough to go beyond 1 frame resolution), the thumbnails disappear. If I zoom back out, they reappear. Are you just zoomed in to the point where they disappear?

I have very limited experience with video in SONAR, but I know that some video files don't report their frame rate, and if the frame rate isn't reported to SONAR it will not display thumbnails. I've also seen the upside-down video preview failry often. Regards, John

Here is what they said about an upside down video fix in 8.5.2: "WMV videos are sometimes displayed upside down when first imported into SONAR in Windows Vista or Windows7".

John said: "Right click on the thumbnail track and select show thumbnails. By default they wont show. " Well, it does not help. Nothing happens when I do that. Still no thumbnails. Biodode said: "resetting the now time to 1 I mean to basically send the line to the start". Sorry, but it doesn't change anything on my Sonar. Video is still upside down. To Tarsier: I use Vista 32 bit. The trial is Sonar PE v.8, not 8.5 since it is not available for trial. I use mpeg2 PAL files, but even other formats I tried are shown upside down so it doesn't seem to depend on the file format...or? You said something about zooming in. I don't see any control for zooming on the thumbnails. Or do you mean zooming in the project timeline? That doesn't make the thumbnails to appear either. I also wrote to CAkewalk and got a reply from them the day after. They said it might be I don't have the correct video codecs installed on the computer and they asked me to send the video file, which I did yesterday. Let's see if the find something. I am quite sure I have all the codecs installed though. Martin

Got this reply from Cakewalk: "Hi Martin, Thank you for contacting Cakewalk Technical Support. I was unable to open your video file in either versions of SONAR. I believe this is due to the file format. Try importing a video file that is mpeg and not mpeg2. This should work for you." I will try this and return.

I have not done much video work, but am presently and, indeed, the video has a tendency to go upside down. This happens in particularly if I undock the Multidock. Help! Sonar X1 Vista Business 64 bit

WMV video still appears upside down all the way to X1 (using Vista). Luckily enough, starting and stopping the transport bar fixes it eventually, who knows why

Yup. WMVs are upside down and backwards for me as well. Multimon and the video undocked may have something to do with it, but this is just absurd. Sonar can no longer be my primary DAW. Sorry to go, but working music-to-picture is simply not practical given the myriad other tools which do it so elegantly. That's too bad. It was my first DAW and I've been with it for many years. Heck, I even started the Seattle Sonar Users Group along with Bitflipper a few years ago. But Cakewalk has shown over the years that music-to-picture is not a market segment they care about very much. I have a lot invested in Cakewalk tools, so I will keep an eye on the next release, though I'm not optimistic. I'm afraid Cake has missed the boat. Even if they do improve post-production features, they will be playing catch-up to everyone who has already been doing it well for several years.

We don't use PAL in the US... we generally use NTSC format. For PAL, make sure you have the framerate set to 25 fps. I just loaded a WMV and an AVI and neither were upside down so before condemning Sonar, you might want to check your drivers and your settings.

Daveny, this is a longstanding bug in Sonar reported by numerous people. As for my project, the frame rate that the filmmaker used is NTSC 29.97 drop-frame. None of my other video-enabled editors have this bug (Vegas, Sibelius, Reaper, Audition). None of my video players have this bug. Sonar-only. Also, the video goes solid green on occasion, too. Sonar-only.
