RESOLVED - MIDI track stops playing after thawing - Sonar Studio 8.5

Hi,

I've been having this issue on and off for awhile and wanted to post now while it's actually happening to see if there is a solution.  This person had the same issue it sounds like, but only managed to find a workaround: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=1974904&mpage=1#1976213

Here is a video I recorded of the problem to give everyone the full effect:
http://pleasurejunkie.net/sonar_midi_issue.avi

Sonar Studio seems to randomly stop recognizing MIDI notes on my virtual instrument track (this also happens with MIDI tracks routed to separate audio tracks).  What's very odd is that if I go into Piano Roll I can play the notes and they trigger the samples fine which tells me it's not the instrument.  If I click on the notes themselves they even sound.    I'm not 100% but it may related to thawing a frozen instrument track.

I also checked the event list as others have mentioned but it's only pure notes as far as I can tell.

I also tried restarting Sonar's audio engine to no avail.

I'm running 8.5 with all the updates on Vista Home SP1 on a Dell Inspiron with a dual core Intel.  Not sure on my chipset offhand.    I have an M-Audio Delta-66 / Omni Studio.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

    Now this is interesting...

As someone having this problem mentioned in a previous thread, if I create a new MIDI track, arm it and hit record (without actually recording anything) then my other MIDI track plays fine.   However, if I stop and then hit play instead of record the track continues to not see the MIDI notes.

I restarted Sonar thinking that would fix it but it does not.

I went ahead and contacted Cakewalk support with the above info.  If they're able to provide a resolution I'll post here for anyone that has the same issue.

I'm happy to report a quick, painless and stupidly easy fix.  Cakewalk suggested I change my MIDI playback buffer from 250 to 500.  (Located in Options > Global > Midi).  I discovered my buffer was actually at 20!!!  Putting up to 250 completely fixed my problem.  No more annoying MIDI drops!  I can honestly say I've never messed with or even paid attention to that setting so I would've never thought to try that.  Thanks to Cakewalk.

Thanks for posting the solution to your problem, Patrick - I can't imagine how your buffer ever got set to 20 - ?!  250 is standard and works for most people.  Glad you're fixed up -now your thread could help future users when they use the Forum search.
