link to visual representation of mixes

came across this today. Its pretty cool it shows you how differant genres of music are mixed using visual elements (like how big the bass is in an alternative rock band compared to the guitar etc),including Blues,Jazz,Country (Maybe not sure) ,Heavy metal,Reggae.

It's from a book  then ?! I like the idea of a visual approach to mixing like this. In the Hip Hop graph the kick is huge and its interesting to see how the high hats are balanced on either side of it. I wonder if this is to balance the mix ? Lows in the centre and highs tucked in the corners ? I dunno really,I'm just guessing lol, but it's interesting to speculate  !

Kev, one thing I noticed and probably makes little difference, I mean it's just a quirk of mine probably, is the location of the drum's parts.

When I hear drums recorded like those pictures I imagine a left-handed drummer or I'm behind the drummer. I prefer hearing drums like I'm looking at a right handed drummer.

I don't mean to de-rail the visual topic, just something I noticed.

    Hi !
yep I know what you're saying that you can record it from either the players perspective or the listeners ? Thats a cool concept ! I wonder how many mixes there are out which is done from the players perspective,so that when you listen its like you're playing in the band ?Maybe I'll be able to work that into one of my mixes - after 10 years working out how to do it lol

taken from David Gibson book !! excellent book , they should have mention it !!

It's from Dave Gibson's 'Art of Mixing'. It comes in book or DVD form.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/D...oduction/dp/B0002IQM6G

I thoroughly recommend the DVD or the book. I have both and would say the DVD is much more useful. I would say it's a must for noobs. It helped me a lot anyway and I think intermediates would get a lot out of it too.

The book is pretty much a word for word transcription of the DVD which is around 3 hours long. Dave's humour is kinda fun as well. The "Thomas Dolby - She blinded me with science"...reference track used throughout will drive you batty eventually as will the characters who pop up from time to time. However, they all help to get various points across in an amusing fashion. Various snipets of the afore-mentioned song are used to demonstrate delays, phasing, panning and preverbs etc.

    Great stuff.

Odd that Gibson isn't credited on that site at all. No "reproduced with permission" notice, no citation. Just "copyright 2008 ocularstudio".

This is strange. Either "ocularstudio" is Gibson's own enterprise, or it's a blatant case of plagiarism. If the former, why doesn't he plug his own book? If the latter, why hasn't he sued them?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks zippsinc, never realised there was a DVD version of this very useful book. Now on its way to me from Amazon!

bitflipper... I doubt Dave Gibson has the time or resources to sue the ocularstudio lot. Better if he (or several of us here) just tell the site owners what needs doing. They should respond Ok to helpful pointers. I will do that now... [Edit 1: Done!]
Edit 2... Good news. The website owners have added a recognition sentence for the author David Gibson as well as an Amazon link for his book. All's well that ends well. Hope David gets some more book sales he deserves for an innovative book and DVD.

I've seen that book somewhere also.  I'm surprised at how many mixes have the bass, kick and snare off-center.  I was thinking of trying something simular to the Alt Rock Mix on a song that I'm having a hard time giving everything it's oun space.
Are they soaking down the overheads with reverb to put the cymbals that far back in the mix?
