SONAR Home Studio 4 + Windows 7

Hello!

My boyfriend recently installed HS4 on a new computer after the old one died. We tried opening the files we had saved and nothing would play (no bar movement, nothing). Upon further investigation we noticed that there are absolutely NO drivers in the Options>Audio window. There have to be drivers on the computer because audio works in other programs.

How can we fix this??

Thanks!

Windows 7 requires you to have drivers for your hardware. What soundcard do you have?

Let me just say I am having a supremely hard time navigating Windows 7, so please bear with me.

In the Device Manager (which didn't take me 15 mins to find... I promise!) under Sound, Video and game controllers it says: Realtek High Definition Audio.

Under properties for this device it shows (many) drivers installed, says it is up to date and that it is working properly.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make sure the Realtek drivers are selected for Input and Output.

Therein lies the problem. There are no drivers listed in that window. There is nothing under Playback Timing Master either.

Maybe SHS4 doesn't know where to find the drivers in Windows 7. Just a guess, but it could be that's one part of not being compatible with that OS. (I have SHS6 and have to upgrade - you may need to as well)

    UPDATE!

So I found how to set up Realtek Audio in Cakewalk software (on the Cakewalk site).
We now have the play bar moving, but no sound is coming from the headphones. Tests on the headphones show they are working fine, as is the jack on the front of the machine.

What are you trying to play? Audio tracks or MIDI tracks?

what do you have set for your output on the audio track in SHS?
when you say "tests headphones show they are working fine" does that mean you have HEARD something from the tests?  if you play a song using windows media player can you hear anything from the headphones?

    Hi Beagle,

I don't understand your first question, I'm sorry. We have tried both Speakers and Output for the Playback Timing Master. Both drivers are highlighted.

And yes, we have heard through the headphones using the Realtek test, Limewire, Youtube, etc. etc.

each track in your project needs to have an OUTPUT.  it's designated by an "O" on the field of the track properties.  it should say something similar to what the Playback Timing master has.

Beagle, you are our hero. We set the Outputs and it works perfectly. Thank you so much!!
It seems like a really nub-ish thing, I know. But having to re-install it from scratch just threw us for a loop.

Thanks a million to everyone who responded :)

    Hello:
I installed Sonar Home Studio 7XL on a new computer running Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3, Intel Core 2 Quad, 2.4 GHz, 3 GB RAM. I had previously copied all folders from the install on the old computer.
It has two partitions;C: operating system and some program files, and D: Sonar Home Studio 7XL install and Sonar folders copied from install on old computer plus some other program files. All of the DXi plug-ins are missing. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Is the OS 64-bit? DX won't work on 64-bit OSs.
Also, check where SONAR is looking for the files; the default is the C drive, so it may be looking in the wrong place for them.

This is not true. Currently Cakewalk ships both 32 and 64bit DX plug-ins with SONAR. The 32bit DX plug-ins only work in 32bit SONAR. Both the 32 and 64bit versions of SONAR run on 64bit Windows.

The plug-ins do have to be properly installed to work and older plug-ins typically require the DAW to run as administrator.

Yeah, there was a lot of confusion about this a few years back when the 64bit stuff was starting to hit the market. There are even a few reports where die hard fans of some 32bit only DX plug-ins managed to get them working in 64bit SONAR by using DX-to-VST wrappers so the bridge software would see the plug-ins.

Right. I was advised to install both 32- and 64-bit versions of SHS 6. The stock DXs worked in the 32-bit SHS 6, but not the 64-bit.
It's nice to see that Cakewalk and their partners created 64-bit DXs and DXis for the future users.

Not all the DX plug-ins have been ported. Sonitus, the Cakewalk plug-ins that came with P5, TTS-1, Cyclone, Pentagon I, PSYN II and GrooveSynth were ported. Of the older CW effects only the ampsim, tapesim and pitch shifter were ported. All the rest are stuck at 32bit. I believe that would be most of what was included in SHS. Some nice ones like StudioVerb and it's contemporaries were left behind.

Then some of the newer synths like DimPro, Rapture and z3ta+ had the DX versions dropped in favor on VST versions.
